When singer Sunidhi Chauhan was told by music director 'You have man's voice, it won't work'

Sunidhi Chauhan has innumerable fans who are diehard fans of her voice. However, she too had to struggle to make a path for herself in the music world.

MUMBAI: Sunidhi Chauhan has innumerable fans who are diehard fans of her voice. The lady is a renowned singer and has crooned for myriad Bollywood films. But did you know she was once told that 'You have man's voice, it won't work'? 

Yes, you read that right. Sunidhi too had to struggle to make a path for herself in the music world. 

Sunidhi spoke about the criticism she faced in the initial stage of her career and said, "I did get to hear things like, 'You should pack your bags and go home'." "Another music director told me, 'This kind of voice isn't going to work, you have too strong a voice. It sounds like a man's voice'," she added. 

Well, that’s history now!

Sunidhi Chauhan started performing in local gatherings at the age of four. She made her career debut at the age of 12, with the film Shastra in 1996 and since then there has been looking back. Though she faced rejections, eventually, her voice won over everyone. 

She came into limelight after recording ‘Ruki Ruki Si Zindagi’ from Mast in 1999.  It won her Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent and was nominated for the Best Female Playback Singer. Post this, ‘Mehboob Mere’ from Fiza earned her love and fame. 

Sunidhi Chauhan then went on to sing for many films and some of her popular songs include ‘Dhoom Machale’, ‘Kaisi Paheli’, ‘Deedar De’, ‘Beedi’, ‘Chor Bazaari’, among others. 

She has been bestowed with many honours and awards including three Filmfare Awards: two for Best Female Playback and one RD Burman Award for New Music Talent.
