MUMBAI : We often talk about the most popular television shows and how there are some shows which were a major disappointment. We have also discussed how there are some shows which were way ahead of its time and that some make for a must watch till date!
There are many television shows which are extremely popular, loved and have run for the longest time in the history of television. However, the audience has overlooked how regressive and problematic they were in actuality!
Take a look:
Sasural Simar Ka
The drama, which debuted in 2011, revolved around a young girl who wished to continue her love of dancing after getting married. The first season of the show ran for seven years, during which time the plot became as backward as it could get.
Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai
Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, one of the longest-running TV series in India, redefines marital toxicity unlike any other show. In the show, Naira and Kartik are married at least six times. That is also the amount of times they split up. The third and the fourth generation of the show are no different.
Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah
Despite having millions of admirers, the show contains several negative aspects that we have chosen to overlook. In front of other Gokuldham society members, Jethalal called his wife Daya "Aye pagal aurat" and "Nonsense" and though eventually there are moral values which are imprated about importance of women in the society and equality, the show’s premise is essentially patriarchal.
Saath Nibhana Saathiya
The drama is among the most retrograde TV serials, even with all the attention it is receiving. Women are portrayed as either "vamps" or "bechari" in it. The topic of women's education and leaving their homes to work has never even been touched upon on the program.
Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi
For eight long years, we watched the ludicrous daily soap opera, and at that time, we ignored the issues in the heartbreaking series. The main focus of the narrative was Savita's treatment of Tulsi because Mihir wed her against the desires of his mother.
Tulsi had to work very hard to win over her mother-in-law because she was a lower class person—the daughter of a priest.
