Anirban Bhattacharya, who acted in films like Eagoler Chokh, Colkatay Columbus and Durga Sohay, is playing the title role in Arindam Sil’s upcoming film Dhananjoy, which is based on one of the most important cases- ‘The conviction of Dhananjoy Chatterjee’.
The first look and trailer of the film was released yesterday (3 July) in a court room set up at a hotel of Kolkata in the presence of media wherein Anirban, who is playing Dhananjoy, was presented as the character with his hands cuffed and police around him.
While addressing to the media, the actor said about his mental preparation for the role, “Arindam da had once asked me, if I remember the Dhananjoy case. I said that, yeah I remember, but I was too young at that time. So, he said he was planning to make a film on Dhananjoy and once everything gets finalized he will let me know. As soon as he had let me know about the initiative, I started preparing mentally for the role. This is not a subject or role for which you can prepare only by reading books, but you need to get into that mental space.”
The talented actor also said that the director took him to the real locations to understand the subject well.
He said, “Once the work resumed, Arindam da took me and Arya (she is playing Dhananjoy’s wife) to Dhananjoy’s home, where we met his family members. He also took me to Alipore Central jail.”
Anirban said that it was emotionally quite challenging to play the character.
He expressed, “I have no personal experience of the incidents that the film is talking about. I don’t know how a person would have felt when he was told that he will be hanged in three days. As an actor I would say to understand that (psychology) was the most difficult task.
“You get drained emotionally while portraying such a character. Even today when I was made to wear this attire (jail uniform) and when my hands were cuffed, I was drenched with an emotion, which if expressed in the lines of Shakti Babu (Bengali poet and writer) could be said, ‘Se Boro Sukher Somoy Noy’,” he signed off.
The film will see Anusha Viswanathan (daughter of director Ashoke Viswanathan) as Hetal Parekh; Sudipta Chakraborty as Surbhi Parekh, Hetal Parekh’s mother and Paran Bandopadhyay is playing Sashi Chatterjee, father of Dhananjoy Chatterjee.
However, in the film, some of the names have been changed like instead of Hetal Parekh, the name Hema Parekh has been used.
Popular Tollywood actors like Mimi Chakraborty, Mir and Kanchan Mullick are playing the pivotal roles of advocate here.
Produced of SVF Entertainment, Dhananjoy will release on 11th August.
