MUMBAI: The Indian Premier League (IPL) has introduced a temporary rule change allowing teams to sign short-term replacement players for the remainder of the ongoing 18th season. However, these players will not be eligible for retention ahead of the next auction, as per a report from ESPNcricinfo.

This decision comes in light of the league’s resumption on May 17 following a week-long suspension caused by rising tensions between India and Pakistan. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a revised schedule on Monday, confirming that the tournament will now conclude on June 3 instead of the originally planned May 25.

Following the updated dates, several overseas cricketers are returning to India to see out the rest of the season. However, a few players have opted out of the rescheduled matches, including Delhi Capitals opener Jake Fraser-McGurk and Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Jamie Overton.

Previously, IPL regulations allowed franchises to bring in replacement players only in cases of injury or illness and only up until their 12th match of the season. However, the league has relaxed this rule due to exceptional circumstances, now permitting temporary signings even for reasons like national duty or personal matters.

A memo shared with the franchises, as reported by ESPNcricinfo, stated: "Given the non-availability of certain foreign players due to national commitments or personal reasons or any injury or illness, Temporary Replacement Players will be allowed until the conclusion of this tournament." It also clarified that these temporary players will not be eligible for retention and must re-enter the player pool ahead of the IPL 2026 auction.

However, the league noted that any replacements signed before the suspension are still eligible for retention. Four such signings took place just before the week-long break: Sediqullah Atal joined Delhi Capitals, Mayank Agarwal signed with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, while Rajasthan Royals brought in Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Nandre Burger.
