IPL 2025: Ravichandran Ashwin opens up on the off-balance nature of the award ceremonies

MUMBAI: The IPL 2025 season has kicked off with a bang, with teams like SunRisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, and Gujarat Titans already crossing the 230-run mark in the first week alone. The T20 format often favours batters, and the unbalanced nature of the contest has become evident in the IPL award ceremonies as well, according to Chennai Super Kings' bowler, Ravichandran Ashwin.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin pointed out that IPL presentations tend to reward batters far more than bowlers. "During the presentation show, nearly 50% of players from both teams end up receiving some award. However, if a bowler bowls a great spell, he rarely gets any recognition," Ashwin remarked. He highlighted the multiple batting awards—such as Super Striker, Super Fours, and Super Sixes—while the bowlers are left out. Even the fastest ball award, he noted humorously, could go to a bowler who got hit for a six. He joked, "It's not like bowlers will run away from the ground with the ball. If I don't bowl, how will you hit me?"

Ashwin also voiced strong support for Punjab Kings' Vyshak Vijaykumar, who made a significant impact as an impact substitute in a high-scoring match against Gujarat Titans. Brought into the attack in the 15th over when GT was cruising at 169/2 while chasing a daunting 244-run target, Vyshak gave away just five runs in each of his first two overs, putting the brakes on the scoring. Despite his third over going for 18 runs, he ensured GT needed 27 runs off the final over, leading to their defeat. However, Shreyas Iyer, who scored an unbeaten 97, was named Player of the Match.

Ashwin expressed his disagreement with the decision, praising Vyshak’s impressive death bowling. "PBKS were out of the game when Vyshak was called in during the 14th over. He executed his plans brilliantly, nailing yorkers and wides under pressure. Even the occasional full toss surprised batters. For me, Vyshak was the MVP, and he deserved the Player of the Match award,” Ashwin asserted.
