IPL 2025: Will CSK ending up on 10th position push them for the next great rebuild?

Sehwag listed names he expects could be let go in the overhaul: "Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, R. Ashwin, and Vijay Shankar — these are names we might not see in CSK next season... Now, if you’re building a team — build it for the next ten years, not just one season."

MUMBAI: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have long been synonymous with success in the IPL — five titles, countless finals, and the leadership of MS Dhoni. They thrived on experience, winning with veterans when others chased youth. But in IPL 2025, that formula has faltered.

CSK’s recent loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad was their fourth at home — equalling their worst-ever home record. 5 more matches to go but the prospect of finishing last is no longer far-fetched.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, Virender Sehwag didn’t mince words and said, "I can't say for sure whether Chennai will finish 10th or not, but if they do, that's sweet too! Because then they'll finally realise what it feels like to be at the bottom of the table. After all this time, after playing so many finals, they haven’t experienced this."

Rohan Gavaskar agreed and suggested it could be the shock CSK needs. He said, "So if Chennai (CSK) finishes 10th, it’ll be a system shock... It could make them better for the next year. Honestly, I think finishing 10th might be better than finishing 8th or 7th... something major has to be done next year," said Gavaskar.

However, he believes the core management isn’t the problem. "This is the same think tank that took them to 10 finals... It’s the personnel that needs to change — the kind of thinking and cricket you’re playing in 2025 T20, that needs updating."

Sehwag listed names he expects could be let go in the overhaul: "Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, R. Ashwin, and Vijay Shankar — these are names we might not see in CSK next season... Now, if you’re building a team — build it for the next ten years, not just one season."

With playoffs likely out of reach, a major squad rebuild feels imminent. And perhaps, a bottom-place finish is the bitter pill that leads CSK back to glory.
