Ae Watan Mere Watan vs Veer Savarkar, Tanhaji, Ponniyin Selvan: Fans lament lack of historical series on OTT

The audience has been witnessing the trends of movies and series where the makers and creators have been making Biographies, fictional stories set in the past, remakes and patriotic movies. The audience has now noticed how there are many movies which are based on real events in history.

MUMBAI: Hindi audiences, who were so in love with the big screens, were compelled to fall in love with OTT platforms too due to the uniqueness of content they provided to viewers which felt like a breath of fresh air. There came a time when the audience was heavily on OTT streaming platforms and got a little bored of what was happening in movies on big screens.

However, things changed and the theatres got their audience back. Now the audience is well-divided between OTT and Theatres. It’s been quite some time now that the audience is getting to watch a lot of unique content, be it on OTT or in theatres. Many genres are now being explored and the OTT platforms become a great playground for experimentation.

The audience has been witnessing the trends of movies and series where the makers and creators have been making Biographies, fictional stories set in the past, remakes and patriotic movies. However, the audience has now noticed how there are many movies which are based on real events in history but there aren’t a lot of OTT series which are based on the history.

When talking about historical dramas, we think of many movies like Swatantra Veer Savarkar, Gandhi, My Father, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Border, Ponniyin Selvan and countless more.

Leaving a few like ‘The Forgotten Army’, ‘Rocket Boys’, ‘Bose: Dead or Alive’, ’21 Sarfarosh - Saragarhi 1897’ and ‘The War In The Hills’ – the audience demands more and notices that while there are so many movies being made of the incidents that took place in history, we are not getting as much content to watch on the OTT space.

We recently saw the Sara Ali Khan starrer ‘Ae Watan Mere Watan’ which released straight on Amazon Prime but once again, it was not a series. After looking at the trends, the audience is now questioning if there is a maker who can make some binge-worthy historical or period drama.

With the rise in content, will OTT spaces make way for Historical content? Well, it’ll be interesting to watch who takes the responsibility.
