Chhatriwali movie review: Rakul Preet Singh starrer tries hard to be an entertaining film that gives an important message, but i

MUMBAI :Last year, we saw a film titled Janhit Mein Jaari starring Nushrratt Bharuccha in which she played the role of a girl who sells condoms. The movie revolved around a girl who works as a condom seller and she gets a good salary. However, she hides it from her in-laws, and till the time they come to know about it, she is not keen to leave the job as it’s not just a job for her anymore because she understands the importance of safe sex. Now, cut to this year, we have Chhatriwali which stars Rakul Preet Singh in the lead role. The film has started streaming on Zee5 today and before you decide to watch it read our review below…

Chhatriwali revolves around Sanya (Rakul Preet Singh) who stays in Karnal and gives chemistry tuition to kids at home, but that doesn’t help her in earning a good amount. She is looking for a job and gets an offer to be a quality manager at a condom company. She accepts the job just for the sake of money. But, one incident changes things for her, and she decides to educate the people of her city about why it is important to have safe sex.

The basic concept of Chhatriwali is good, but we cannot ignore that it is quite similar to Janhit Mein Jaari. Also, many elements in the film will remind you of Janhit Mein Jaari like the in-laws not happy with the job of the protagonist and telling her to leave it, the protagonist understanding the importance of safe sex after a personal incident, and a lot more.

Chhatriwali also looks cluttered a bit. It starts with something and goes into something. Of course, the makers give out a strong and important message, but then when a film is made on the subject, it has to keep the audience hooked, and that’s where Chhatriwali fails.

Performance-wise, Rakul Preet Singh, Sumeet Vyas, Rajesh Tailang, Satish Kaushik, Prachee Shah Paandya, Dolly Ahluwalia, and Riva Arora, all the actors have done a decent job, but we expected more from them. However, we can’t blame them as the film’s script and narration is so weak that the actors don’t get a chance to shine.

Overall, even though  Chhatriwali tries to give an important message, it is not an interesting film. You can clearly skip this one even if you don’t have a subscription to Zee5.
