Govinda Naam Mera movie review: Vicky Kaushal and Kiara Advani shine in this predictable film

MUMBAI: In the 90s and early 2000s, we saw whodunit genre movies with a comedy backdrop in them. But, in the past few years, we have hardly seen such films. Shashank Khaitan, who is known for directing the Dulhania franchise, gets the murder-mystery-comedy genre back with his film Govinda Naam Mera. But, does he succeed in giving the audience a good film? Well, read on to know more...

Govinda Naam Mera revolves around Govinda (Vicky Kaushal) who is a background dancer. He has a wife named Gauri (Bhumi Pednekar) and a girlfriend named Sukku (Kiara Advani). Govinda wants a divorce from his wife; he is fighting a property dispute case with his stepbrother, and also wants to make it big as a choreographer. But, things aren't falling into place for him, and in between that he gets involved in a murder. So, will Govinda be able to solve the problems in his life?

The movie is written and directed by Shashank Khaitan and there are a few scenes that will make you laugh out loud, especially the ones featuring Renuka Shahane. But, the problem is that the story of the film is very predictable; and after a point, you will guess the climax easily. Also, in between Shashank's narration looks a bit cluttered as too many things are happening in the film.

Shashank gets full marks in one thing and that is the casting. Vicky Kaushal has tried something new this time and he impresses us a lot. Let's hope we get to see him in more such roles. Kiara Advani is a surprise in the film. She looks hot and has performed amazingly; she steals the show. Bhumi Pednekar has an extended cameo and she doesn't need a full-fledged role to prove her mettle.

In the supporting cast, it is Renuka Shahane who steals the show. Her one-liners will surely make you laugh. Sayaji Shinde, Dayanand Shetty, Viraj Ghelani, Amey Wagh, Jeeva, and Trupti Khamkar, all of them are good and leave a mark in their respective roles. Ranbir Kapoor's cameo is sweet and surely a treat for his fans. Even Shashank has a cameo in the film and he is damn good in it.

Well, Shashank Khaitan's movies always have great songs, and that's what we miss in Govinda Naam Mera. Apart from Bijli, no other songs are impressive and the background score is just decent.

Overall, Govinda Naam Mera is not a bad film, but it's not even a must-watch. If you have a Disney+Hotstar subscription, you can watch it once just to pass your time.
