MUMBAI: Akshay Kumar is in the prime of his career at present. In fact, the man is simply unbeatable right now. Twelve back-to-back certified hits! It is an achievement only yesteryear stars could dream of – and is a virtually impossible feat in today’s times of fickle audiences and shortlived success.
And the actor has achieved the impossible. In recent years, an Akshay Kumar release is an overflowing gold mine for all stakeholders concerned – producers, distributors, and theatre owners. He’s not called Khiladi Kumar and 'king of the box office' for nothing.
Sample the box office collections of Akshay Kumar’s last three films.
Good Newwz – opening weekend 64.13 crores, total 205.14 crores
Housefull 4 – opening weekend 49.26 cr, total 205.60 crores
Mission Mangal – opening weekend 67.39 crores, total 192.67 crores
All three are super duper hits, with two of those being high-flying 200 crore + net grossers.
Also, all three recovered their budgets at the end of the first week itself!
And this, when they had to compete with other great movies for eyeballs. Housefull 4 released at the same time as Made In China and Saand Ki Aankh, Mission Mangal with Batla House and Saaho, and Good Newwz released six days after Dabangg 3.
Imagine the 'hungama' that a mouthwatering movie like Laxmmi Bomb would make at the box office, were it to release in the theatres after their reopening – this ‘bomb’ would have made the biggest blast ever, in our opinion!

Hungry for cinema entertainment after an extended period of being locked down at home, the audiences would have flocked to the theatres to watch it – just like thirsty travellers lost in the Sahara Desert flock to water.
If Laxmmi Bomb would’ve released in theaters, even in a clash scenario with Salman Khan’s Radhe, it would’ve taken a bumper opening of minimum ₹20 crore net. Also, Laxmmi Bomb would be a sureshot contender for the 200-crore club, given the fact that it is a remake of the super entertaining Tamil blockbuster, Muni 2: Kanchana. And in the solo release scenario, it would have easily minted upwards of 200 crores. The original budget of Laxmmi Bomb is quite mediocre. Imagine the profit the makers would have made from a theatrical release! Quite spectacular, is what trade analyst Sumit Kadel said.
All of the above leads us to believe that Laxmmi Bomb’s digital release is not a good idea, even with the talks of the 120 crore selling figure doing the rounds. It is an opportunity lost. In fact, it is an outright disastrous idea.
