MUMBAI: Although Ali Fazal has participated in numerous international and Indian projects, it was the web series Mirzapur on Amazon Prime Video that catapulted him to fame. Ali earned a new type of recognition from his role as Guddu Pandit in Mirzapur. Although the character initially seems to be a man who is just interested in his appearance, the audience learns more about him as the show goes on. Ali found it difficult to give Guddu a personality that goes beyond his appearance.
During a roundtable discussion, Ali mentioned that initially, people were only interested in the appearance, but he wanted to show them inside the character's head. He said, “Like Mirzapur, I thought… At first everybody is about looks. Like how we should look. And my biggest thing was, I want to run away from that and pull people into this guy’s head. It’s always fun when you are in my little toy land. Then, I can play. Then, I’m having fun.”
In a previous conversation, Ali Fazal said that he made other diet and lifestyle changes but chose not to drink any protein drinks or other additives to bulk up for Guddu. He added, “My most boring time in my life was working out for Mirzapur. I couldn’t sleep. We would work out for three hours everyday and while doing that, you have to maintain your peace because we are creators. I refused to use wrong means.”
In the same interview, he revealed that he nearly got into a confrontation with his director because he did not see Guddu having a full head of hair. He said, “For Guddu, I had to almost fight with my director at the time that I don’t see him having hair.”
Ali stated that Divyenndu played the role of Munna after he was originally offered it, “I wasn’t even offered Guddu first, I was offered Munna. I said this is a very author-backed role and it’s a great role but I think I can bring something more to this (Guddu).” The third season of Mirzapur is anticipated to be released in 2024.
