On the Bard’s death anniversary today, it’s time to rummage through our collection of classics and read a line or two. If that’s too much of a task, you can simply pop in a DVD of these movies that are inspired by the works of William Shakespeare. This weekend, let’s pay tribute to one of the greatest writers to ever walk among us…read on:
Goliyon Ki Raasleela- Ram Leela:
The story of star-crossed lovers who decide to kill each other than end up with someone else is inspired by the writer’s Romeo and Juliet. Even though there have been many adaptations of the classic, it was Ranveer and Deepika’s reel love story that made us sit up and take notice.
Angoor:
This entertainer of dual identities and double trouble is a reflection of Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors. Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Verma will make you giggle uncontrollably throughout. If you’re looking for a laugh out loud session on Saturday, watch this flick for sure.
Omkara:
Vishal Bharadwaj’s love for the Bard is known to all. Perhaps that’s why it comes as no surprise to see him adapting the writer’s works for his Bollywood outings. Omkara, based on Othello, put Saif Ali Khan firmly in the Khan league, thanks to his stellar acting. It also starred Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor and Bipasha Basu in pivotal roles.
Maqbool:
When you combine William Shakespeare’s work and the backdrop of underworld, you get an explosive movie like Maqbool. Based on the tragic play Macbeth, the movie boasts of crackling acting by Tabu and Irrfan Khan, among others. Needless to say, it was a visual extravaganza at the BO.
Haider:
Another Vishal Bharadwaj movie saw the writer’s work come to light. Along with Shahid Kapoor’s superb acting, the movie also focused on the burning Kashmir issues without getting too preachy.
Aren't these literary work just too amazing???
