The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards have been presented. The awards ceremony held at London’s Royal Opera House saw the convergence of A-listers who had either come to collect the awards or were there to applaud the award winners. List of award winners: Best film: 12 Years a Slave Other nominees in this category were American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Gravity and Philomena. Outstanding British film: Gravity Other nominees Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, Philomena, Rush, Saving Mr Banks and The Selfish Giant. Best actress: Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) Other nominees: Amy Adams (American Hustle), Sandra Bullock (Gravity), Judi Dench (Philomena) and Emma Thompson (Saving Mr Banks). Supporting actor: Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips) Other nominees Daniel Bruhl (Rush), Bradley Cooper (American Hustle), Matt Damon (Behind the Candelabra) and Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave). Supporting actress: Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle) Other nominees: Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), Lupita Nyong'o (12 Years a Slave), Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) and Oprah Winfrey (The Butler). Best director: Alfonso Cuaron (Gravity) Other nominees: Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips), Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave), David O Russell (American Hustle) and Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street). Best cinematography: Gravity Films that also vyed for the awards were 12 Years a Slave, Captain Phillips, Inside Llewyn Davis and Nebraska. Best costume design: The Great Gatsby Other nominees: American Hustle, Behind the Candelabra, The Invisible Woman and Saving Mr Banks. Best editing: Rush Films that were also nominated: 12 Years a Slave, Captain Phillips, Gravity and The Wolf of Wall Street. Best visual effects: Gravity Films also nominated in the category were The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Iron Man 3, Pacific Rim and Star Trek into Darkness. In a nutshell, the BAFTA supports, promotes and develops the art forms of the moving image namely film, television and video games by identifying and rewarding excellence, inspiring practitioners and benefiting the public.
