MUMBAI: : Namita Lal, who is known for her projects Lihaaf, Football – The Goal, Before Life After Death, Oxygen and Inn Galiyon Mein, among others, believes that an actor needs to work on the craft and reinvent oneself from time to time. She said, "An actor absolutely needs to work on their craft, whether it’s by watching good films and shows or observing other actors they admire."
"Personally, I love watching Meryl Streep and Viola Davis. I can watch their films repeatedly because they inspire me. That kind of inspiration is also a form of work for me. I also enjoy reading. Right now, I’m reading Stanislavski and Meisner, and I recently completed Jeff Goldberg’s foundation course on method acting technique. It was a fantastic three-month course that has played a significant role in my journey as an actor," she added.
She also shared that she had the opportunity to work with Manoj Bajpayee in workshops and has attended sessions with many prominent acting coaches. She said, "All these experiences have contributed to my growth and understanding of the craft."
Namita also enjoys reading biographies of actors; she said, "It’s comforting to know that I’m not alone in facing the challenges that come with this career. From auditions with low success rates to the emotional ups and downs of the industry, reading about how other actors, both big and small, have navigated their journeys gives me valuable insights and motivation to keep going."
Asked her thoughts on how off-screen friendships help one perform better, she said, "Acting is all about action, reaction, and responsiveness. I love working with actors who give their best performance even when the camera isn’t on them. That sincerity and dedication enhance the entire experience."
"I’ve been fortunate to work on films like Inn Galiyon Mein, Oxygen, Lihaf, and Before Life, After Death, alongside incredibly talented actors like Javed Jaffrey and Vivan Bhatena. They are not only dedicated to their craft but also supportive co-stars. Some roles have been extremely challenging, especially physically. For example, we shot a film in the real streets of Lucknow during the peak summer heat in May. Despite the tough conditions, my co-actors remained committed, never letting the challenges affect their energy or performance. Working with such dedicated people makes portraying characters like Amma even more fulfilling," Namita ended.
