MUMBAI: Megastar Amitabh Bachchan's journey to superstardom began in 1973 with Prakash Mehra's ‘Zanjeer,’ which established his status as the Angry Young Man of Hindi cinema. With impressive roles in the Salim-written films ‘Deewar’ (1975), ‘Sholay’ (1975), and ‘Don’ (1978), he solidified his place in the film industry.

Yash Chopra directed 'Deewar,' which featured a fight between Ravi, played by Shashi Kapoor, and Vijay, played by Amitabh Bachchan. The two brothers, a police officer and a criminal were brought together by fate. The film's impactful dialogue is being talked about today.

Who could forget the powerful lines spoken by Amitabh's character Vijay in the temple while he prayed for his sick mother, "Aaj khush to bahut hoge tum..." Big B said that, despite the scene's widespread recognition as an emotional one today, the audience found it funny during its premiere.

Amitabh Bachchan said, “Vijay, who has no belief in God, finds himself climbing up the steps of the temple to pray for his ailing mother and his opening line is ‘Aaj khush to bahut hoge tum’ (You must be very happy today). I do remember the premier of ‘Deewar’ and there was this snigger and laughter in the audience. And that conveyed that it was so unexpected, and they thought it was some kind of a joke, but within a couple of seconds after that, they just froze.”

Many claim that 'Deewar' is the perfect screenplay, yet few are aware that Javed and Salim created it in just eighteen days starting with a very brief plot.

Salim Khan said, “Once the script was completed, we hadn’t cracked the climax, so Javed and I completed it sitting on the parapet nearby. Then we went straight to Yash Chopra’s house and narrated it. For almost 5 minutes, there was complete silence."

“If you narrate the story of ‘Deewar’ to someone, there is a 90% chance they will kick you out,” he added.

'Angry Young Men' will be released exclusively on Prime Video in India on August 20.
