MUMBAI : From the late 80s, Indian films' scale had begun to increase. Many films like Raziya Sultan which was made on a huge budget of Rs 7 crore and fantasy film Ajooba has made on a budget of Rs 8 crore. But months later, a Telugu actor-director broke that record. And just like Ajooba, this film was a massive failure too, despite the presence of four superstars.

V Ravichandran produced and directed a film in 1991 named, Shanti Kranti and it was made in four languages Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi. The director, Ravichandran himself played the lead role in the Kannada version along with Juhi Chawla as the female lead. The biggest change in the other languages were the lead actors. Nagarjuna played the hero in the Telugu version; Rajinikanth was the lead in the Hindi and Tamil versions. Made on a budget of Rs 10 crore, Shanti Kranti was the most expensive Indian film of the time.
Despite the massive budget, the presence of four megastars and a lot of publicity across India, the movie flopped, where it failed to recover its budget, earning just Rs 8 crore at the box office. The director went bankrupt, losing all his money. To make up for the losses, the actor had to work in a lot of low-budget films for many years.
