Did over exposure on television (Bigg Boss) dent Salman Khan’s Jai Ho's box office performance?

Salman Khan
What happens when you see Salman Khan on your idiot box for way too long? Monotony creeps in and you start looking for better alternatives. When Jai Ho released last week, even though it was a Salman Khan movie appearing on celluloid after a long hiatus, it didn’t feel as if we missed him. Prior to the release of his movie, the ‘Being Human’ actor was seen week-after-week on television, hosting and anchoring the controversial Bigg Boss season 7 on Colors. Making matters worse were his constant tiffs with Kushal Tandon which kept him in news even after that particular episode was over. All this meant that when Jai Ho finally released last week, audience had already seen enough of Salman Khan, in their lives. It has often been noticed how an overdose of a particular celebrity can result in public getting bored and ultimately consciously avoiding him or her. Staying mysterious is the key to success in showbiz. If there is nothing new or hidden about you, the ruthless audience will soon lose interest and move on to something more spectacular and waiting to be explored. When Salman made his first public appearance last year in the month of September, at a press conference held to announce Bigg Boss 7, the response was nothing less than terrific. The palpable interest shown by scribes who had trooped in hordes was a sight to behold. But since then, the novelty factor has fast worn off. Salman’s looming presence on television meant viewers got enough opportunity to watch and enjoy the antics of their favourite star on television. Though it ensured that the reality show got maximum eyeballs, what it effectively did is make the audience say ‘Yeh dil maange no more.’ His tiff with contestants too didn’t go down well with many of his fans. When Salman took sides and judged right from wrong, viewers felt as a host he should have remained neutral and impartial to the proceedings. So when Jai Ho released, audience had already seen enough of Salman. His wit, his trademark dance steps, his ubiquitous anger, all of which were on display in Bigg Boss were seen in Jai Ho as well. “What’s new?” quizzed his countless fans after seeing the trailer of Jai Ho. After all, Jai Ho too, was a typical Salman Khan movie where rage, romance and ranting held forth. Sadly, viewers had seen all this in Bigg Boss 7. His silver screen outing was not promising to offer anything new. Apart from his prolonged appearance on television, there were other factors at work too which contributed to Jai Ho’s dismal show. Well- known trade analyst, Komal Nahata points out. “The movie didn’t work because the promos never picked up, the heroine was non-glamorous and the music was bad. The plot was great but again the script was bad.” Agreed, other factors of the movie were not quite strong but then Jai Ho was not at all different from any of Salman’s earlier movies. The audience would still have wanted to see their favourite star dancing and kicking some a**, like he always has, had they not seen enough of him already on television, we feel.
