Dimple Kapadia reveals being naive when she got married to Rajesh Khanna; ‘I actually thought Rajesh Khanna ji would sing ‘Mere Sapno Ki Rani Kab Aayegi Tu’’

MUMBAI: When Dimple Kapadia first fell in love with Bollywood actor Rajesh Khanna, she was just a teenager. After their marriage, she took a few years off from the film industry. Dimple previously admitted in a previous interview that she was incredibly naïve when she fell in love with Rajesh. She went so far as to say that she was so "filmy" that even in the mountains, Rajesh would sing for her 'Mere Sapno Ki Raani.'

Speaking a few years back at the FICCI FLO Jaipur Chapter, Dimple stated, “Because I am such a filmy kid, you know I actually thought Rajesh Khanna ji would sing ‘Mere Sapno Ki Rani Kab Aayegi Tu’. He will take me to the mountains and sing.” Dimple chuckled as she related the story, mentioning how "young" she was when she first met him and how much the films had inspired her.

“I swear I am not lying, because I was so young. And there was such an impact of the movies. Toh jab mountains pe pohanche aur gaana bhi nahi hua, hawa bhi nahi chali toh meri toh haalat kharab ho gayi (So when we reached on the mountains but there was no song and no gust of wind, I was in a bad state) because my dream was shattered. Because I seriously believed it. I mean how dumb can you get? But well that was me,” she said.

In the same conversation, Dimple was questioned about her best role to date and she replied, “The best role of my life has been Mrs Rajesh Khanna. That’s been my best role.” Before separating, Dimple and Rajesh were together for nearly eight years, but they never got divorced. Twinkle and Rinke Khanna, their two daughters, were shared.

In the same discussion, Dimple talked about how she met Rajesh shortly after signing Bobby and shared her love story with him. She was approached by Bobby when she was just 13 years old, and Rajesh Khanna was 15 years older than her.

She recalls being invited to an event in Ahmedabad along with other movie stars after she signed on to work on Raj Kapoor's film. They just so happened to be seated next to each other on the same flight as Rajesh.

“So he sat next to me, and I was looking at him. Very cleverly I told him ‘vahan toh boht crowd hoga, bheed hogi, aap mera haath pakdoge na?’ He said ‘haan bilkul’. I said ‘hamesha ke liye?’ (I told him there will be so much crowd there, will you hold my hand? He said yes, of course. I asked forever?) I was very filmy and yeah, the rest is history. It happened.”

Rajesh Khanna was 69 when he passed away in 2021.
