MUMBAI : Janhvi Kapoor was captured on camera asking the paparazzi, "Aap na galat galat angles mat lena," in a video that went viral lately. The images of her curvaceous back were widely shared on social media the next day. Although Nora Fatehi also blasted photographers for focusing too closely on her body, she stated she was "unfazed" and that she couldn't teach them all how not to take pictures of her or other famous people.

The attention is once again on the paparazzi as celebs speak out against their actions while chasing a female celebrity for photos, after Alia Bhatt's complaints over specific paps invading her privacy. While promoting her next movie, Mr. & Mrs. Mahi, Janhvi gets along well with photographers, but she starts to notice when she's being photographed.

Additionally, the actress told the popular news portal that she has been feeling "not so confident" lately because people are taking pictures of her from "wrong angles." The actor claims that although not all photographers take these kinds of photos, some are paid to take certain kinds of images to create headlines.

The actor said a lot of the paps are very respectful of her and other actors, and respect boundaries. “But some of them have also been incentivised to do these things. Like they’ll take a normal video of you but in the cover photo they’ll use the picture with the wrong angle, the ones that look the most sensational because it is clickbait, especially when it is a woman. That’s when you feel not most comfortable.”

“I can’t even walk confidently because there is a constant commentary going on in my head that ‘bachke rehna galat angle aa sakta hai (be cautious you are being clicked from wrong angles)’. It’s sad, unfortunate, and I hope better sense prevails. It’s not respectful,” she said.

She says, “There was a phase when I would happily say ‘bye’ without realising why they are asking me to do that. Now I feel how stupid I was. Then there are comments on how I was intentionally trying to show these angles. The judgement around a woman’s clothes, character, sexuality is so sensitive, it’s exhausting. I hope we can come to a place where the media, the paparazzi are more cognizant of these things.”

Nora Fatehi

When it comes to feeling this way, Janhvi Kapoor is not alone. Before this, Nora Fatehi had also expressed how uncomfortable she felt about the way some of the paparazzi would zoom in on specific body areas when photographing her.

Nora had previously discussed the actions of the paparazzi when following a female celebrity in an interview with the well-known news portal, “I guess they’ve never seen a butt like that before. It is what it is. The media doesn’t just do it to me but to other female actors also. Maybe they don’t zoom into their butt because it’s not exciting but they zoom into their other body parts unnecessarily. Sometimes, I think that there’s nothing to zoom into, so what are they focusing on?”

Mrunal Thakur

Mrunal Thakur has gone so far as to say that her parents find it awkward seeing her photos when they are posted online and taken from incorrect angles.

The popular magazine was told by the Sita Ramam actress that she needed to speak with the photographers. She stated, “Earlier I was facing this problem, until I had a conversation with the paps. I showed one of them the chat which my mother had shared where she had said ‘kiti pan dhaaklele kapde ghaatle tari pan te loka focus tithech kartat (however you dress up, they focus there only)’, that’s what she said in Marathi. So I was like should I stop getting clicked, should I change my route when I see you? And they know the car so we can’t even ignore them.”

“But I just told them that I respect your profession and you need to respect me and my identity, my character and who I am because when my relatives and family friends see, it doesn’t leave a good impression, not on me, not on the page it is uploaded on. So, they’ve understood and I am really happy that there are people who are also talking about it, that they are not comfortable. I don’t know why others don’t talk. Maybe they are okay with that, they can go and pap them that way, not us,” she added.

Yogen Shah is a seasoned para paparazzo with more than thirty years of experience. When celebrities are clicked in improper ways, he becomes angry. He states that he supports every actor who speaks up and calls for a set of rules that photographers on location should abide by as well as a fundamental understanding of how to handle such situations.

In response to a question on whether or not celebrities get upset by the way they are occasionally photographed, he said, “It is not right. We should know where to draw a line. Just because we have access to the stars and because they are pally with paps on the field, it doesn’t mean we click then disrespectfully.”

Yogen added that due to tighter regulations, press photographers are aware of what the publications they submit photos to will and won't publish. However, he said, “There are many boys who stand for hours together to click celebrities who are almost always late at events and media appearances. While most of them know their limits, some get desperate to click pictures as the celebs don’t give them much time. Then there are some of them on the field who have their YouTube channels and social media pages and such pictures make for clickbait content, so they don’t know where to stop.”

He says, “Stars respect the paps and vice versa. Just a basic understanding of understanding their body language and not clicking their pictures when they seem uncomfortable, for instance while stepping out of their car.”
