MUMBAI: Although the filming for Maharaj by YRF and Netflix was finished in 2021, the film was not released until 2024. The movie, which stars Aamir Khan's son Junaid Khan in his feature debut, was scheduled for release in early June, but a stay order was issued in response to a request alleging that it offended the feelings of the Pushtimarg group. Nevertheless, Maharaj was eventually made available on Netflix after the Gujarat High Court approved the movie and overturned the stay order.

Junaid said, “Before Maharaj happened, I had been receiving scripts. I’ve been doing plays in Mumbai since 2017. At that time, I would also be offered film scripts and get calls for auditions and readings, on an on-and-off basis.” He added, “Siddharth (P Malhotra; director) sir and Adi (Aditya Chopra; producer) sir saw my test for another film before they called me in for Maharaj. This is my first film because this is the first thing that worked out for everybody.”

Junaid shared why he is not on Instagram saying, “Not really. People didn’t know what I looked like largely because I never took to social media even when it became a thing. There was no conscious decision there. It’s just how it happened and panned out.”

Reacting to the response on Maharaj, Junaid said, “It has been really heartwarming and gratifying. A lot of people from the industry who have liked the film have reached out. I’ve had classmates from college who I haven’t spoken to in ten years and school texting me. I’ve had lots of conversations with Adi sir. He really liked the film and my work in it.”

Sai Pallavi also gave Maharaj the thumbs up and complimented him on his first film. The pair will appear together on screen in a Sapporo-set love tale being produced by Junaid's father, Aamir Khan, and working under the working title Ek Din. The movie's Japan schedule is already finished, and rumors have it that Mumbai will host the second phase of production shortly. He doesn't say much about the project, but he's happy to be on film alongside Sai, saying, "Sai Pallavi is absolutely fantastic." I'm crossing my fingers for this one.
