MUMBAI : In a world of ever-evolving cinema, Kangana Ranaut remains a force to reckon with, constantly pushing the boundaries of her projects. In a recent interaction, the actor turned director opened up about her admiration for the timeless filmmaker Guru Dutt and revealed how she hope to be remembered by her work someday.
The second time director passionately expressed her deep admiration for the filmmaker, acknowledging his lasting impact on Indian cinema. “There is no greater filmmaker in our history than Guru Dutt. He was so important, and his passion was brilliant. If I could meet him, I would request him to direct me in his films,” Kangana said, reflecting on the artistry of one of India's most iconic directors.
She elaborated on what makes Guru Dutt’s films so captivating. “Watch Mr. and Mrs. 55—the way he made a comedy film and directed it, his acting... his films like Kagaz Ke Phool and Pyaasa, what brilliant shots he has given. The shadow shot where he was moving and the shadow came in was a revolutionary shot as a technician. He was tremendous. He was so intelligent.”
Guru Dutt, known for his visual style and deep emotional narratives, continues to inspire generations of filmmakers and actors alike. For Kangana, the complex characters and innovative cinematography in films like Kagaz Ke Phool remain unmatched. “Everybody loves Kagaz Ke Phool, but the characters were really difficult roles,” she added.
Kangana also shared her admiration for Waheeda Rehman’s role in Guide, which she believes epitomizes the kind of layered, meaningful characters she aspires to portray. “I loved Waheeda Rehman’s role in Guide. It was so powerful and ahead of its time.”
While the opportunity to work with Guru Dutt will always remain a dream, Kangana believes that a project helmed by such an iconic director would transcend generations. She envisions herself in a role that carries the emotional weight and visual sophistication of Dutt’s films—a part that challenges both the artist and the audience.
For a filmmaker who is constantly exploring new facets of her craft, Kangana’s next Emergency is a project the world is waiting to watch. The film was scheduled to release on 6thSeptember but was put on hold due to CBFC’s clearance .
