
MUMBAI: Veteran actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, widely recognized as 'Bharat Kumar' for his patriotic films, has passed away at the age of 87. He breathed his last on Friday at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital after a prolonged illness.
Renowned for his contributions to Indian cinema, Manoj Kumar left an indelible mark through his iconic films that celebrated national pride. Some of his most notable works include Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974). Born as Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Amritsar, Punjab, he built a legacy in the film industry that continues to inspire.
According to reports, the legendary actor had been admitted to the hospital on February 21, 2025, after a decline in health. Medical records indicate that he succumbed to cardiogenic shock following an acute myocardial infarction, commonly known as a severe heart attack. Additionally, he had been grappling with decompensated liver cirrhosis, which further deteriorated his condition.
Speaking to PTI, Manoj Kumar’s son expressed that his father was now "out of his misery." He shared that the veteran actor had been facing multiple health issues and was bedridden for several years but passed away peacefully.
Manoj Kumar’s cousin, Manish R. Goswami, also conveyed his sorrow, stating, "This is a great loss for the nation. With his passing, an era of patriotic filmmaking has come to an end."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the cinematic legend, calling him an icon of Indian cinema. In a message on X, PM Modi expressed his condolences, highlighting Kumar’s unparalleled contribution to films that instilled a sense of patriotism in audiences. He emphasized that the late actor’s works would continue to inspire generations to come.
Throughout his illustrious career, Manoj Kumar gained recognition not only for his acting but also for his directorial excellence in films centered on nationalistic themes. His dedication to the art form earned him numerous accolades, including a National Film Award and seven Filmfare Awards across various categories.
In acknowledgment of his invaluable contribution to Indian cinema, the Government of India honored him with the Padma Shri in 1992. Further cementing his legacy, he was bestowed with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015, the highest honor in Indian filmmaking.
Manoj Kumar's final rites are scheduled for tomorrow. His cremation will take place at Pawan Hans. His son confirmed the funeral arrangements, stating, "We will leave the hospital at 9 AM, return home by 10 AM, and proceed to Pawan Hans at 11 AM for the cremation."
His passing marks the end of an era, but his contributions to Indian cinema and his unwavering patriotic spirit will live on through his timeless films.
