MUMBAI: Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama, marks the major collaboration between India and Japan, making it a unique part of the Anime culture that is now seeing a major rise in India too.

The epic anime released initially in 1993 in English, produced by Yugo Sako and Kenji Yoshii, along with the directors, Koichi Sasaki and Ram Mohan, while the music was composed and directed by Vanraj Bhatia. The movie is of course based on the famous Indian epic ‘Ramayana’ and voice actors include Nikhil Kapoor as Rama, Rael Padamsee as Sita, Mishal Varma as Lakshmana, Noel Godin as Hanuman, and Uday Mathan as Ravana.

The movie made an ‘epic’ come back and this time, it hit the big screens on 24th January this year and it has been released in the original English along with newly dubbed Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Now, we got into an exclusive conversation with Kenji Yoshii where he gave some really interesting insights about the movie. Mr. Yoshii was accompanied by Mr. Prem Motwani who was working as interpreter and coordinator for the project at that time. Even here, Mr. Motwani was an interpreter for Mr. Yoshii.

When asked about the birth of the idea, Mr. Yoshii said, “It was Mr. Sako’s idea because he used to travel to India quite often for his work and he came to know about Ramayana and read about it. So he thought, there are so many special effects in that which only animation can do justice to it so it was his brain child.”

It is interesting to see how someone from Japan was so interested to make an anime about Ramayana and so when Mr. Yoshii was asked what fascinated him so much about it, to which Mr. Motwani interpreted, “So first he had read about Ramayana and he thought we could do it. It started in ‘82 and completed in ‘93, so it was a good eleven years time. So during that time he interacted with many people like Mr. Narendra Sharma, Mr. Oberoi and so many other people who are so-called scholars. So in the process of course he went into depth but initially the idea clicked to him...”

It was an inspiring conversation with many things to learn and discover. Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama is back and in theatres this time.
