MUMBAI : Actress Vidya Balan made her Bollywood acting debut with the release of Parineeta. The film was based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's 1914 Bengali novel of the same name. At the box office, the movie was a great financial hit, earning over Rs 32.63 crore globally.
When it was first released, it also earned favorable reviews that praised the cast's acting, the soundtrack, the production design, the costumes, and the narrative. The film also established Vidya Balan's role in the limelight. The film Parineeta became her breakthrough achievement. The actress hasn't looked back since and has established herself in Bollywood.

Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan, and Vidya Balan played the key parts in Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Parineeta, which also starred Raima Sen, Sabyasachi Chakrabarty, and Dia Mirza in supporting roles. Kolkata in the 1960s served as the backdrop for the film. Lalita and Shekhar, who have been friends since they were young children, had their love story depicted by Parineeta.
Over time, they start to love each other. However, their happiness is hampered by Shekhar's father's cunning plans and a string of misunderstandings. The introduction of Girish, a family friend of Lalita, twists the story further. Finally, Shekhar defeats his father's selfishness and gets the strength to pursue Lalita, reuniting him with his real love.
Earlier, Vidya Balan admitted to the media that she wasn't the first choice for the Lolita part in Parineeta. The lead female position in the film was initially offered to Aishwarya Rai; afterwards, there were rumors that Rani Mukerji was also under consideration. Then, Vidya Balan was given the part following 60 screen tests. The public also adored Vidya Balan's on-screen connection with Saif Ali Khan and her modest yet elegant appearance. The movie left a deep impression on the audience.
Following Parineeta, successes like Lage Raho Munna Bhai and Bhool Bhulaiyaa had Vidya Balan showcasing her acting abilities. In critically praised movies like Paa, Ishqiya, No One Killed Jessica, The Dirty Picture, and Kahaani, she also had a supporting role.
