Every Bollywood film can't be released in China: Producer Dinesh Vijan
Bollywood producer Dinesh Vijan has said all Hindi films cannot be released in China due to censorship.
Dinesh believes with the success of some films like Hindi Medium, Secret Superstar, Dangal, which were released in China, the country is becoming one of the fast-growing markets for Bollywood cinema.
The producer said this during a panel discussion at the Jagran Cinema Summit on Friday evening.
He was asked if China is a great opportunity for Bollywood for business.
"Though not all the Bollywood films can be released there, a certain aspect of their culture is similar to ours and the connection is there. A horror film cannot be released there, a film where a guy wearing a turban cannot be released there," he said.
"We released Hindi Medium there last year. The film did a business of more than Rs 220 crore. It worked because of the language barrier issue... a kid struggling to get an admission in school... such issues were relatable. They like emotional films," explained the producer whose latest film Stree fared well at the box office.
Dinesh, who is currently busy making a film Made In China, and have a plan for a sequel of Hindi Medium, mentioned, "We will release these films in China as well."
Abhinay Deo shoots major part of 'Doosra' on film
Filmmaker Abhinay Deo has chosen to shoot a major chunk of his next movie, a docu-fictional sports drama film titled Doosra, on film.
The creative decision to shoot on film was taken because he wanted to recreate a certain 1990s' look for a part of the film, which is based on those years. And more so because movies back then were shot on film.
Deo said in a statement, "Shooting on film has a completely different feel to it. It means that much more precision and planning. Nothing beats the authenticity, realism, the rich texture and the vibrant feel of shooting on film. Moreover, I want the audiences to relive the nineties and many of them still associate a certain cinematic feel to films from that era because those movies were shot on film.
"That's the most important reason why I chose to shoot on film."
Deo said, "As one part of the film is shot on film, showcasing the 1990s', the later part will be shot on digital which will showcase the 21st century. So it will be an interesting mix."
The Delhi Belly director, who recently helmed the Irrfan Khan-starrer Blackmail, has been researching for Doosra. He also travelled to Lords and met former cricket greats.
For this project, Deo is collaborating with New York-based Stick Figure Productions, known for their last film Chasing Tyson, directed by Oscar-nominated director Steven Cantor. The film is set for a theatrical release next year.
The film is a social documentary that captures the cultural change in the country through all aspects of society from politics to business to the arts. It promises to present a fresh insight-driven point-of-view on the rise of India with a parallel reference to the power of cricket as a sport in galvanising an evolution never witnessed before.
'Simmba', 'Zero' clash would've affected box office numbers: Rohit Shetty
Shah Rukh Khan's Zero and Ranveer Singh's Simmba are both much-awaited big ticket movies, which were earlier set for a clash during the Christmas season. Now they will release a week apart to avoid the box office collections getting affected, says Simmbadirector Rohit Shetty.
Talking about the potential business that might get affected due to the release of these two films, Shetty said here on Friday, "I think one week is enough and there is no competition. Earlier we were planning to come on the same day, but then we went into a discussion.
"We decided not to come together because that would affect numbers. It was a mutual decision. If the film does well in the first week, it will go on."
Rohit was present at the Jagran Cinema Summit where he spoke about understanding the pulse of the mass audience for the commercial cinema, in which he has carved a niche with films like Golmaal, Singham and Chennai Express.
Asked if he is interested in making a biopic on someone, Shetty said, "If I ever want to make a film on a personality, I would love to make a film on Maratha warrior Shivaji Maharaj. I can make it really well."
