MUMBAI: The tiny blue-white denizens of Smurf village are coming back for a new adventure in the upcoming film, eight years after the last Smurfs film arrived in 2017. Directed by Chris Miller and Matt Landon, The Smurfs marks the return of the Grammy-award-winning singer Rihanna to the music scene, who also voices Smurfette. Along with Rihanna, the voice cast also includes John Goodman, James Corden, Kurt Russell, Nick Offerman, Sandra Oh, Marshmello, and Daniel Levy among others. Ahead of the film’s release on July 18th, Emmy-winner Sandra Oh opens up about her full circle moment with Smurfs.
Decades before Sandra Oh became a household name, she was just a kid in Canada, dressed in blue, singing her heart out in a school play. “In one of my first school plays, I was a Smurf and sang a little song,” Oh recalls. Now, in a charming twist of fate, she returns to those roots—this time on the big screen.
Sandra voices Moxie Smurf in the new The Smurfs movie, a bold reimagining of the beloved franchise set in Paris. Oh’s character, Moxie—a stealthy and sharp leader of an underground group of activist Smurfs—is a fresh addition to the Smurf universe. For Oh, taking on the role was not just a creative challenge but also a nostalgic return to her childhood, when she read the original French-language comics by Belgian artist Peyo while growing up in Canada.
“I grew up reading The Smurfs comics in the original French,” she says. “So yes, I’m an O.G. Smurf fan. There’s something timeless about them—maybe it’s their shape, or maybe just the fact that they’re blue. Either way, the memories run deep.”
Paramount Pictures India releases The Smurfs in India on 18th July in English and Hindi.
