Will Smith' s daughter tested him, Sarah Hyland takes social media break, Kevin Hart to host 2019 Oscars and other Hollywood updates

MUMBAI: Here are the fresh and new happenings from the world of Hollywood

Will Smith' s daughter 'really tested' him

Actor Will Smith says his daughter Willow "really tested" him after she achieved early fame with her "Whip My Hair" single.

The father of three, who is 50, spoke to Haute Living about experiencing a "mutiny" within his family in 2012 after his daughter Willow, 18, admitted she had to "forgive" him for how he handled her early fame, reports by media.

His family's reaction to his leadership style culminated in the movie star changing his perspective on how he viewed his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and their children. The moment led him to consider joining social media, he said.

"(I) secretly call (2012) the year of the mutiny. And 2012 was really the year that my family rejected the direction of my leadership. And that was the main thing that happened.," Smith explained.

Smith shared his father, Willard Carroll Smith, Sr., ran a tight ship during his youth due to his background in the Air Force.

"He dealt with the family like a soldier. I was used to the whole family working the family business and being run like a military unit. You follow orders, you have goals, you achieve things and there's punishment from the higher ranks if you don't do what you are told to do," said Smith.

Sarah Hyland takes social media break

Actress Sarah Hyland is taking a break from social media following the tragic death of her 14-year-old cousin Trevor Canaday.

The "Modern Family" star has announced that her decision to temporarily step away from using any of her social media accounts was a result of the "horrible negative ignorant words" that Internet trolls commented in relation to Canaday, who was killed last week in Omaha, Nebraska, in an alleged drunk driving accident.

"You guys finally did it. Your horrible negative ignorant words have broken me. Happy?" she wrote on Twitter, reports of leading publication.

"Staying offline for a while. I have a special announcement and video releasing on Wednesday I believe. So. There's that," Hyland, 28, concluded.

On her Instagram Story, she posted the emoji of a hand showing the peace sign.

She called for those with "negative thoughts or opinions about the tragedy that happened to my family, to keep them to themselves. You don't know all the details. And how dare you attack when a beautiful life has been lost."

Over the weekend, the actress announced on social media that Canaday "was killed by a drunk driver". She said her uncle, who was also in the car, "is still in the hospital in need of more surgeries."

According to police documents obtained by People, the driver Jeffrey Eggeling had a blood alcohol concentration of .103, while the legal limit for driving under the influence is .08.

Kevin Hart to host 2019 Oscars

Comedian Kevin Hart will host the next Academy Awards ceremony in February in 2019.

The "Ride Along" actor shared the news through an Instagram post on Tuesday, reports of media.

"I will be sure to make this years Oscars a special one," said the comedian, adding: "Now it's time to rise to the occasion."

The star is emceeing the event for the first time.

First-time producers Donna Gigliotti and Glenn Weiss will oversee the show, with Gigliotti serving as producer and Weiss on hand as co-producer and director.

Jimmy Kimmel was happy to pass on the baton to Hart.

"Congratulations amigo. The Academy made an excellent choice. You are going to kill it," Kimmel tweeted.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had held talks with the comedian about hosting the February ceremony.

"I appreciate The Academy for the opportunity," wrote Hart in his post.

"For years I have been asked if I would ever host the Oscars and my answer was always the same...I said that it would be the opportunity of a lifetime for me as a comedian and that it will happen when it's suppose to."

The last two Oscar shows were hosted by Kimmel and produced by Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd. But each year ratings declined, with a record-low 26.5 million viewers tuning in for last March's broadcast, which adds to the pressure the new team will face.

Oscars 2019 will be held on February 24, and will be aired in India on Star World.

Cardi B, Offset call it quits

Rapper Cardi B has said that she and her husband Offset have called it quits and plan to get a divorce.

Cardi took to Instagram on Tuesday night to share the news via a lengthy video, which she captioned simply: "There you go..peace and love."

"So everybody been bugging me and everything, and you know I've been trying to work things out with my baby father for a hot minute now," said Cardi, who appeared to be topless in the intimate clip, reported by media.

"We're really good friends, and you know we're really good business partners, and you know, he's always somebody that I run to to talk to and we got a lot of love for each other. But things just haven't been working out between us for a long time," she added.

The couple secretly wed in September 2017, and didn't reveal the news until this June. However, their relationship was marred by multiple allegations of infidelity leveled against Offset after the pair announced they were expecting their first child.

The couple welcomed their daughter, Kulture, in July.

"It's nobody's fault, it's just like, I guess we grew out of love," Cardi said in the video, and added: "But we're not together anymore. I don't know, it might take time to get a divorce."

Cardi went on to say she will "always have a lot of love" for Offset "because he is my daughter's father".

Offset later seemingly confirmed the news in a comment on Cardi's post, writing: "Y'all won," leading fans to speculate as to who the rapper was referring.

The duo had packed on public display of affection just last week at a concert where Offset joined Cardi on stage while she performed some of her biggest hits.

Jazz musician, actor Roger V. Burton dead

Jazz musician, television actor and developmental research psychologist Roger V. Burton is dead. He was 90.

He died on November 30 at his home in Santa Monica, media reported.

Burton began as a professional jazz trombonist at the age of 11, playing in big bands and on studio film soundtracks. Earning himself the nickname "Schoolboy" for doing homework between set breaks, he started college at University of Southern California at the age of 16 and graduated with a BA and BM in music, as well as an MA in Sciences.

His musical history includes playing with Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, Andre Previn, Johnny Ray, Frankie Laine, the Lennie Niehaus Octet, The Ink Spots, the Chuck Cabot Band, and the Dick Pierce Band. He was a regular on Ernst Gold studio recordings for films as well as The Hoagy Carmichael Show on NBC.

After taking lessons from friend and jazz legend Charles Mingus, Burton switched to the bass and began playing in smaller combos. However, this would not be Burton's last career change, as he went on to study psychology at Harvard University after writing a response to a study that claimed musicians were irresponsible. In 1967 he worked with Swiss child developmental psychologist Jean Piaget, and later with John Whiting.

For the last few decades of his life, Burton changed careers yet again to become a television actor.

He played Philips on "The Cool Kids", Zach Galifianakis' father-in-law on "Baskets" and had roles on "Shameless", "The Clapper", "My Name is Earl", "Fargo," "Super Clyde", "American Body Shop", "Monk", "House", "The George Lopez Show" and "Up All Night".

He also appeared on "American Idol", "Good Morning America" and "The Tonight Show."

Ten years ago, he and his late wife, novelist Gabrielle Burton, climbed to the base camp of Mt. Kilimanjaro at 80 years old, reported by leading publication.

Burton is survived by his daughters, Maria, Jennifer, Ursula, Gabrielle, and Charity, his sons-in-law, David Mathieson, Aniruddh Patel, Graeme Boone, Darin Henry, Steve Duron, his sister JoDe Kielhofer, nieces, nephews, and his eight grandchildren.

Katie Price to marry again

Singer Katie Price is reportedly engaged to on-off boyfriend Kris Boyson.

According to a source, the two are keen to keep the engagement out of the public eye until it is documented in a forthcoming episode of reality show "My Crazy Life", reports of media.

"All these denials and protesting about how much she loves being single aren't quite true," a source told New!

"Yet again Katie is keeping everyone guessing. The fact is that there's an engagement on the cards."

It's understood the two opted to take their relationship to the next level during a romantic trip to Glasgow in November.

However sources claim it was former glamour model Katie, 40, who proposed to the 30-year old personal trainer - with the moment serving as a dramatic cliffhanger on next week's episode of her fly-on-the-wall reality show.

It will be Katie's fourth marriage, with the reported engagement coming as she continues to finalise her messy divorce from Kieran Hayler.

The mother of five ended their-five year marriage in May after Kieran- a self-confessed sex addict- confessed to numerous affairs with different women, including two of her closest friends' and their children's former nanny.

Katie's first marriage to Australian singer Peter Andre with whom she shares children Junior, 13, and 11-year old Princess - came to end after four-years in 2009.

Her second, to cage fighter Alex Reid, took place at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas, with a formal wedding following soon after in 2010. The couple separated little more than a year later.

Katie went in to marry former male stripper Kieran at the Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort and Spa in the Bahamas after accepting his proposal on Christmas Day the previous year.

The couple share children Jett, five, and four-year old Bunny. Katie also raises oldest child Harvey, 16, from a previous relationship with retired footballer Dwight Yorke.

Winnie Harlow wants diversity in fashion world

After making her debut at this year's Victoria's Secret (VS) Fashion Show, model-activist Winnie Harlow, who suffers from vitiligo, which affects the pigment of the skin, says being the first model with the condition to walk the runway was a "huge honour".

In an interview with Teen Vogue, Harlow said: "Any step toward a truly equal and diverse modelling industry is great, but for a huge brand like Victoria's Secret to include models with skin conditions like vitiligo is a huge step to normalising it in the entire industry.

"I hope that there's many more in the future. We need to work toward diversity, not for the sake of it, but to make it the norm. And I hope that this is a big step toward that."

The 24-year-old also admitted that walking the catwalk made her feel powerful and confident, reported by leading publication.

"Walking VS was one of my biggest goals as a model, maybe even my top one, so achieving it made me feel more powerful and confident in my career than I ever have before.

"I'm excited about taking that confidence and letting it show in everything that I do, whether it's amazing things in the modelling world or new things that I've never thought about doing before. I feel like the sky is the limit now," added Harlow.

Amy Schumer calls Meghan Markle her nemesis

Actress Amy Schumer says Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle is her nemesis because they both are pregnant at the same time.

The 37-year-old "I Feel Pretty" star sat down with InStyle for a video segment titled "How to Not Give a S— What Anybody Thinks," which was published on Monday.

During the short clip, Schumer- who announced she was expecting her first child with husband Chris Fischer- joked about being pregnant at the same time as Meghan Markle, referring to the Duchess of Sussex as her "nemesis."

"Why is she my nemesis?" Schumer asked in the cheeky video. "Because she's pregnant at the same time as me and not going to let her get away with that."

Defending her point that everyone is a narcissist, Schumer went on to explain, "So maybe I'm feeling competitive, like, "Oh, Meghan looks better than me and she has a tiny small bump and she's wearing high heels, and I already look 10 months pregnant and I've been wearing flats for the last four years.'"

Wrapping up her argument, Schumer quipped that nobody truly cares about her appearance as an expectant mother because people "really only care about themselves."

This is not the first time that Schumer has drawn wisecracking parallels between her and Markle, 37, who is expecting her first child with husband Prince Harry.

Ahead of her pregnancy announcement, she alluded to the exciting news on her own Instagram feed with a spoof on a Harry and Markle photo.

Days later, the actress shared a topless photo of herself from the back to her Instagram Story, showing her leaning over a toilet with the lid open as a result of morning sickness.
