Priyanka Chopra starrer Mary Kom opened well at the box-office yesterday. The movie reportedly opened on 3000 screens and collected close to 7 crore according to latest reports. It did exceedingly well in states that declared the movie tax-free while in those territories where entertainment tax is still applicable showed a slight dip in collections.
Though Mary Kom may have not have exactly broken any box-office records, trade pundits feel for a woman-oriented subject opening on a non-holiday, the movie did exceedingly well. Avers trade analyst Narendra Gupta, "A subject like Mary Kom is not exactly your clichéd Bollywood candy floss movie. For a biopic based on a female sportsperson, the collections are commendable."
With the weekend starting, Narendra feels Mary Kom is poised to do some brisk business. Says Narendra, "Saturday and Sunday should pull in more audience. The word of mouth about the movie is extremely strong. And aiding matters is the tax-free status in certain states which will only increase the footfalls."
With a majority of critics rating it highly, Mary Kom certainly seems to have a positive buzz surrounding it right now. Narendra predicts the movie to collect close to 25 crore by the end of this weekend.
With the holiday season extending to Monday in Maharashtra owing to Ganpati visarjan, one can expect to see a steep rise in the collections of Mary Kom.
Let's wait and see how powerful a box-office punch the reel Mary Kom can deliver.
