MUMBAI: Talking about choreographers, Farah Khan’s name is synonymous with good dance moves.
From having choreographed multiple hits, she has moved to film direction, yet she continues her tryst with her first love – 'dance'.
On her birthday, here’s looking at 10 interesting dance numbers from Bollywood movies that she has choreographed:
The song Pehla Nasha from the film Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (1992) marked Farah’s entry into Bollywood. A melodious, romantic track featuring Aamir Khan and Ayesha Jhulka has the duo daydreaming and dancing in a picturesque valley.
Ruk Ja O Dil Deewane from Bollywood’s iconic film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) featured Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. Farah, who loves introducing twists to her choreography, borrowed interesting steps from the Lindy-Hop and Rock ‘n’ Roll genres.
One of the most iconic Bollywood songs, Chaiyya Chaiyya from Dil Se (1998) had Farah introducing a prop. And the prop was a train! Who would have ever imagined Malaika Arora dancing on top of a running locomotive with Shah Rukh Khan matching steps with her?!
Ek Pal Ka Jeena from Kaho Na… Pyaar Hai (2000) marked Hrithik Roshan’s entry in Bollywood. Just like the hero’s acting in the film, his dancing also became a talking point, thanks to this song. The hook step choreographed by Farah, called the ‘air pumping step’, is still remembered while mimicking Roshan junior.
Chale Jaise Hawayein is one more example of the twists Farah loves to introduce to her songs. The first half of the dance number from Main Hoon Na (2004) featuring Amrita Rao was shot in a single take! The only break in the action is when Zayed Khan's character Laxman is introduced and the camera cuts to Shah Rukh Khan reminiscing about his long-lost younger brother.
Dhoom Taana gave an opportunity to Deepika Padukone to flaunt her dancing skills in her debut film Om Shanti Om (2007). The actress looks like an apsara as she dances with Shah Rukh Khan in the extravagant track sporting classical and fusion moves.
The song Munni Badnam Hui from Dabanng (2010) came and conquered over B-Town's musical charts that year. The peppy track with desi beats featured Malaika Arora. Farah Khan’s portrayal of Malaika in the item song was seeti-maar at single screens and even at multiplexes!
Farah’s most sizzling and sensational number choreographed till date, Sheila Ki Jawani saw Katrina Kaif in a raunchy avatar. The choreographer kept the signature move so simple that it caught on with the audience in a jiffy! This song from Tees Maar Khan (2010) stood out as a modern item number with Kat doing seductive moves. A takkar to Malaika from ‘Munni Badnaam’?
Farah Khan choreographed the Hindi remake of the hit Marathi track Zingaat from the film Dhadak (2018). Featuring Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor, the duo matched the loud beats with dhinchak steps.
Alia Bhatt made a guest appearance in the hit track named The Hook Up Song from Student of the Year 2 (2019). The actress, along with Tiger Shroff, followed Farah’s instructions to portray sizzling chemistry on screen! Reportedly, the tough steps designed by Farah left Alia with a few bruises, but she refused to give up and despite juggling a couple of films, returned to the set every day.
