Let's take a note of the most popular dance reality shows which are the telly industry's all-time favourites.

MUMBAI: Apart from providing regular doses of entertainment on a daily basis under special slots, The Hindi television industry keeps extending stardom opportunities to all the raw talents out there irrespective of categories, genre, groups, culture, age, gender, religion as the only factor that matters under the 'limelight is sheer talent'. 

With demographic figures of around 1 billion people, India sees a boom in it's youth talent every year. Hence, these talent shows extend support for these unseen and unheard power houses to claim fame on 'the stage'.

Today, let's take a note of the dance reality shows of India, which have provided our unfurnished talents a chance to claim fame and taste stardom, both nationally and globally!

1. Boogie Woogie

Sony Entertainment Television's most-popular dance reality show was created and directed by Naved Jaffrey, Ashu Jain and Ravi Behl. Commencing in 1996, the show was judged by Indian film actor and Television host Javed Jaffrey. Meanwhile, his brother Naved (also the director and producer of the show) co-hosted the show along with film actor Ravi Behl and Kadambari Shantshri Desai.

It is in fact, the oldest dance reality show on Indian TV and went on to become India's longest running dance reality show. The episodes of this show reflected various themes like 'Bollywood', 'Horror', 'Friendship' among others. 

Later on, the popularity of the dance show has led to the creation of parallel championship shows under itself like Kids' Championships, Teen Championships, Mothers Championships and Celebrity Championships (which featured various Indian celebrities like Mithun Chakraborty, Juhi Chawla, Esha Deol, Dia Mirza, Govinda, Vivek Oberoi and Ritesh Deshmukh). 

This show has had 7 seasons so far.

For the unversed, (late) actor Sushant Singh Rajput was himself a part of Boogie Woogie, though not as a contestant. 

2. Dance India Dance

This is an Essel Vision Productions' creation that airs on Zee TV. It first premiered on 30th January 2009 and the judges like Geeta Kapoor, Govinda and Terence Lewis,  Remo D'Souza, Shiamak Davar, etc. (who have been the occasional judges herein) are called 'Masters', with veteran dancer-actor Mithun Chakraborty being addressed as the 'Grand Master' (till season 6). 

The show features a variety of Indian cultural and international dance styles ranging across a broad spectrum of Classical, Contemporary, Bollywood, Hip-hop, Jazz, Kalaripayattu, Salsa and Musical theatre styles, among others, with many sub-genres within these categories represented. The show is choreographed by Indian choreographers, such as Mudassar Khan, Marzi Pestonji, Tanuj Jaggi and Mini Pradhan. This show has been hosted by many renowned Indian tellyfames.

The show has won several television awards, including the 'Most Popular Dance Reality Show'.

The core show had 7 seasons so far, excluding it's spin-offs like Lil' Masters (for kids), Doubles (for duets) and Super Moms.

Notable dance icons like Dharmesh Yelande, Shakti Mohan, Raghav Juyal and others have claimed immense fame through this show.

3. India's Dancing Superstars

This show premiered on Star Plus on 27th April 2013. This show brought together talents from all over India on one platform. This show was pretty unique in itself for following a flexible rulebook as no limit was applied on the age and dance styles of the participants as it invited all dance talents from both India and abroad as an American native had applied for the auditions and a citizen of Nepal was selected as a contestant.

This competition was judged by Geeta Kapoor, Riteish Deshmukh (who debuted as a judge for the first time on TV) and Ashley Lobo. India’s Dancing Superstar was hosted by Aishwarya Sakhuja and Ravi Dubey. 

The very popular group 'MJ-5' ( literally meaning 'Michael Jackson 5' but popularly known as the 'Moonwalk Magicians') from Delhi which included Karthik, Shraey Khanna, Rohit Singh, Himanshu Gola and Vishnu Sharma were declared as the winners.

This show aired only for once through it's 1st and the only season. 

4. Dance +

This dance reality competition is produced by Frames Production house and Urban Brew Studios and is premiered on Star Plus since 2015. The series features dance performers, including solo acts, duos and group performances who represent any style of dance. 

Bollywood choreographer Remo D'Souza is the show's 'Super Judge' while Dharmesh Yelande, Sumeet Nagdev (who appeared for 1 season), Punit Pathak (who appeared from season 2 onwards), Shakti Mohan, Karishma Chavan (season 5 onwards) and Suresh Mukund (season 5 onwards) are the mentors of the show. All of it's seasons were hosted by Raghav Juyal (till date).

The series had 5 seasons so far while it's sixth season has been announced.

5. Dance Deewane

This show aired on Colors TV channel and commenced for the first time in June 2018. The show features dance performers, including solo acts, duets and groups representing any style of dance, who are competing for a grand prize.

The show is hosted by Raghav Juyal and actress Madhuri Dixit and Bollywood choreographers Dharmesh Yelande and Tushar Kalia were the judges.

This show has 2 seasons so far with it's third installment currently being underway (Feb '21).

6. Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa

This show is the Indian version of BBC's Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing with the Stars. The first four seasons of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa were aired on Sony TV while from its fifth season, it has been airing on Colors TV.

Just like in it's parent series, celebrities participate herein to perform various dances together with professional dance partners. The show is a pre-recorded one and is the one of it's only kind that uses recorded tracks rather than live music with an in-house band.

Eminent telly fames have presented the show so far and a galore of eminent Bollywood figures, choreographers, directors, etc. have judged the show, including Farah Khan, Karan Johar, Shilpa Shetty and others.

This show has aired 9 seasons so far and first aired in 2006.

7. Just Dance

This show aired on Star Plus in 2011.

It was judged by well-known Bollywood film actor Hrithik Roshan, along with choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant and film director Farah Khan. Bollywood actor Ayushmann Khurrana was the notable host of the show.

It premiered on 18th June 2011 and has aired two seasons so far. 

8. Nach Baliye

This is another eminent Star Plus reality show which initially used to air on Star One.

Hedrein,10 television real-life celebrity couples compete against each other. Contestants dance to a different tune, different theme and different styles every week and scores are given by the judges. Each week, one couple used to get eliminated based on public voting and their scores.

This show also featured eminent Bollywood choreographers, directors and actors as it's judges and known telly faces as it's hosts. Late veteran choreographer Saroj Khan was an eminent judge of the show for a long time.

This show has had 9 seasons so far (2005-19).

9. Dance Champions

This dance competition reality television series was telecasted on 30th September 2017 on Star Plus and was produced by Urban Brew. 

This was another unique show as the champion and runners-up dancers of different reality shows came together to compete against each other on a single platform. Moreover, new challengers also joined them in order to beat them by displaying their elevated dance moves. Bir Radha Sherpa is the winner of the show.

Remo D'Souza and Terence Lewis were the prominent judges of the show who selected contestants for the top list. The show was hosted by Raghav Juyal and Ridhima Pandit, while Punit Pathak was it's choreographer.

This show just had one season so far.

10. Dance Premier League

This dance reality show replaced Sony TV's and television's longest-running dance show Boogie Woogie by premiering on Sony TV (2009). 

The series is judged by the Bollywood film actress Rani Mukerji and the very famous Indian choreographer Shiamak Davar, who guides all six teams as an 'umpire'. The show is presented by Hussain Kuwajerwala, Eijaz Khan and Sara Khan.

The rules of this show are treated like that of a cricket match with 6 teams representing their respective zones.

This another 'one of a kind' show has showcased has one season so far.  

11. Super Dancer - Dance Ka Kal

This Indian Hindi kids dance reality television series aired on Sony Entertainment Television and Sony Entertainment Television Asia and is produced by Ranjeet Thakur and Hemant Ruprell for their production house Frames Production.

This show aimed to find a kid prodigy who has the potential to be the future of dance in India and it's contestants are mainly kids aged between 4-13 years of age. 

12 selected 'Super Dancers' are paired with one choreographer (Super Guru) who has a unique style similar to theirs who train them, choreograph their acts for them and also perform with them. Lastly, on the basis of the vote figures, one kid gets eliminated every week.

This show was co-hosted by Paritosh Tripathi, Rithvik Dhajnani and Jay Bhanushali. The judges are Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty Kundra, director Anurag Basu and choreographer Geeta Kapoor.

This show has aired 3 seasons so far since 2016.
