MUMBAI: The glamour world is one such place where a lot of people dream to create names for themselves.
All the aspiring actors want to be rising stars and reach new levels of stardom with their hard work.
There are several fields in this showbiz world where people try their luck while some fail, some definitely have great luck and succeed in it.
While some love to be in front of the camera, some love to be behind the camera.
Out of all this, one important aspect of any project be it film, TV, web show or music video is the role of a casting director.
This is one such profession that is gaining prominence these days.
Earlier, no one really knew anything about casting directors and how they operate.
But with the rise in social media and other technologies, things in the entertainment industry have started to function in a different way.
A casting director is the backbone of every project without which things can't be taken further.
There are several casting directors who have made their mark in the industry and are doing well for themselves.
They are the ones who have given us some of the most talented actors and actresses who are today big names on the respective platforms.
TellyChakkar got in touch with co-ordinator Pavan Singh aka Pavi who spoke about his journey so far and future plans.
How did your journey begin in the casting field? Did you take up any course?
I have been in the casting field since 2019. It's been a few years now. I used to do freelance then. I didn't have my own casting company then. I have worked as a freelance casting director in many production houses. I haven't done any course in the casting field. I came to Mumbai to become an actor. I started my career as an actor. However, it was difficult to find work, so I also started off as a casting director. I started working as a coordinator and that's how I developed contacts with people in the industry. When I started off with the casting, people started liking the work and people started approaching us.
You are in this field for a few years but you have your own casting agency. What made you take this step in the initial years of your career?
The casting director works in-house for a production house. I am a freelance co-ordinator who picks up several projects. We also work with casting directors sometimes. The one thing which is very bad about this industry is that they take money from the actors for casting them in a project. There are several casting agencies that do not give work to actors without registration. They do not give them work without taking money from them. Also, they ask for their commission.
I have also started my career as an actor and I have seen myself struggling. I can feel the same for other actors as well.
So, I decided that I will not take any registration fees from any actor. I will get roles for the actor on the basis of his talent.
A lot of people told me to charge registration fees from the actors when I started my casting agency. But I never did this. No one in the industry will say that my agency has taken fees from the actor even before casting him for any role.
My agency's main motto is to cast actors and I will charge them only after their work is done.
However, not all actors show the same honesty towards us.
Amongst so many actors we cast, there are some who never give us fees once their work is done. While we face a loss but we make sure that we never work with that actor again. Also, that actor's reputation also gets spoilt in the industry for doing such a thing.
I never started my casting agency to mint money. I had nothing when I started off with my journey. I always intend to earn money with my honesty and not loot people for my own benefit. I want to establish a name for myself in the industry. I don't mind taking baby steps toward my growth.
What are your future plans for your casting agency?
We are set to do a few projects which my casting agency will handle individually. We used to do freelance coordination till now. Our agency Casting Buzz will be solely handling these projects. Some web shows, short films and music videos are in pipeline. We are going great till now.
Casting Buzz is also set to open a theatre soon. Actors often pay huge amounts and get themselves registered for acting workshops. There are several acting classes that charge huge amounts.
Our theatre's name will be 'Tamasha'. We will charge affordable fees for actors who can learn acting and we will help them make audition videos and also give them first preference for getting roles in various projects.
Well, Pavan has definitely a long way to go!
Here's wishing him all the very best in his future endeavours!
Stay tuned to TellyChakkar for all the latest updates.
