AUDIENCE PERSPECTIVE! From Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai to Imlie, the netizens point out Indian television’s cliché

MUMBAI: Indian television shows have been a part of the audience's daily lives for a long time now. Over time, the type and platform of content changed a lot but people still wish to go back to television dramas and call it their comfort zone.

Times have changed but some things never change. We keep seeing that the storylines somewhat have the same angle. Mostly, there is a pair of siblings and one of them feels less attended, so that becomes the grey shade character of the show.

For example, in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, we see Aarohi feeling less important in the family than Akshara, she is the grey character of the show who constantly keeps planning against Akshara. Similarly, in the show Imlie, Chini feels less attended so she is the negative character and keeps plotting against Imlie. There are more such shows which have the same angle in their plot lines.

This has become quite the cliché by now. The reason for someone being the grey shade character does not feel strong enough and in fact, feels overused. The netizens expressed disappointment about the same.

Here is what they had to say:

Preeti Mehra: I have always been a television buff and have seen so many shows that by now know that there is a cliché that Indian shows use most of the time. I feel there could be stronger reasons to make someone the way they are. There needs to be more creativity and the storyline will automatically look better.

Mira Thakur: I feel that there is so much room for creativity but the writers and makers of Indian television shows keep going back to the overused clichés. I don’t understand why the reason for a character being a grey-shade one is always being the less attended sibling.  There can be so many events that can make the character the way he or she is. Writers in this day and age must start thinking out of the box for once.

Kritika Pandey: Indian television rarely experiments and I am so done with the clichés. It’s the same every time. There is a sibling pair, one feels less of a priority and he or she becomes vengeful and a dark character and keeps plotting throughout the show. I wish the writers thought of a new way of introducing a dark personality.

Pallavi Dubey: At this time point, I am so used to the Indian television ways and it has become so predictable. I just know why a character will be negative and try to plot against someone even before they reveal it. We have such a variety of content that there is a plethora of ideas that can be used but Indian shows keep using the same old angles in the plot like a ritual.
