MUMBAI :Amitabh Bachchan, a celebrity in Bollywood, has been ruling audience hearts for nearly 50 years and has no plans to step down. He's eighty years old and still very much involved in the entertainment industry, and his spirits are still through the roof. Though he has experienced some highs and lows. It is well known that Amitabh went bankrupt in the middle of the 1990s when his business, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation, failed. Like the Shahenshah that he is, he quickly recovered. However, less is known about his early struggles before he rose to fame. Today, we take a closer look at a particular chapter from that time in his life.
Amitabh came from Allahabad to Mumbai (then Bombay) to pursue his acting career, although his voice and height frequently presented problems for him. He was frequently turned down because of these two qualities, which surprisingly ultimately proved to be his selling point. He had acted in movies like Saat Hindustani and Parwana, but although being seen, he hadn't yet made it big. Even the popular movie Bombay to Goa did little to advance his career. When the veteran actor and director agreed to give him a chance, he had already made up his mind to permanently leave Mumbai.
Amitabh was advised by Manoj Kumar that he may leave Mumbai if the film he was offered didn't work out. Manoj Kumar was producing an ensemble feature. Roti Kapada aur Makaan, starring Manoj Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Moushumi Chatterjee, and Zeenat Aman. Amitabh accepted the role because he couldn't say no to a Manoj Kumar movie. The movie ended up being a great hit. Although his part wasn't particularly significant, it was enough to make him stand out and allow him to continue living in Mumbai. As soon as the offers started coming in, he landed Deewar, his groundbreaking film.
Intriguing information exists around Makaan and Roti Kapada. Amitabh's face was positioned at the bottom of the poster, hardly visible, because he was not a well-known actor when the movie was released in 1974. Amitabh was a major star by the time the film was re-released in theaters ten years later. This time, the poster was changed to place Amitabh's visage front and center.
