MUMBAI: Rohit Sharma’s lean patch in the Indian Premier League (IPL) persisted as he endured another disappointing outing against Delhi Capitals on Sunday, despite favourable batting conditions.

Opening alongside Ryan Rickelton for Mumbai Indians, the former captain tried to make the most of the flat pitch with an aggressive start. He signalled early intent by taking on Mitchell Starc in the second over, hitting a couple of boundaries and a six, hinting at a potential big innings.
However, his momentum didn’t last long. In an attempt to play a sweep, Rohit misjudged the delivery and was trapped leg-before for 18 off 12 balls—another premature exit that added to his string of low scores this season.
Rohit’s poor run of form now places him among the least effective openers since IPL 2023. Among players with at least 25 innings in that period, he holds the second-lowest batting average. He has accumulated 805 runs at an average of 24.39, only ahead of Wriddhiman Saha, who has averaged 20.28 with 507 runs.
In the ongoing IPL 2025 season, Rohit has managed a mere 56 runs, averaging just 11.20—numbers that highlight a worrying dip for one of the league's most seasoned performers.
