MUMBAI: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane was taken by surprise when he learned about Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test cricket. The news came shortly after KKR's narrow loss to Chennai Super Kings in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 encounter. Addressing the media post-match, Rahane admitted he was unaware of the development.

"Oh, is it?" Rahane reacted when told of Rohit's retirement. "I didn't know. I'm actually shocked. I was playing a game, so I wasn't aware. But I just want to wish him the best."

Rahane praised Rohit’s journey in the longest format, highlighting his evolution from a middle-order batsman to a successful opener. "He started in the middle order at No. 5 or 6 and then opened the innings. The way he adapted was amazing. He always looked to take on bowlers and play with freedom – that's something he wanted others to do as well."

Rahane said he would personally reach out to his former teammate soon. "I'll probably call him once I get back to the dressing room or send him a message. But I definitely want to congratulate him on a fantastic Test career."

Reflecting on the loss to CSK, Rahane acknowledged that KKR fell short with the bat. "We were 10-15 short, 185-195 would have been an ideal total on this pitch." He credited Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube for turning the match. "They took their chances, and it paid off. It's all about being brave, and they were really brave."

Despite the setback, Rahane remains focused: "Try to win two out of two, and then see what happens from there.”
