MUMBAI: When WWE superstar John Cena showed up on stage at the 96th Academy Awards on March 11 (IST) wearing, well, nothing, he surprised the biggest names in international cinema. In his fully nude avatar, he was seen accepting the Oscar for best costume and highlighted the significance of the costumes department.

On Oscars night, Cena performed a skit with host Jimmy Kimmel before giving out the prize. He was observed complaining to Kimmel that he was too afraid to strip in front of the crowd. Kimmel urged him and perhaps even scolded him to go on stage and complete his assigned task.
Everything started when Kimmel made an indirect allusion to an incident that occurred during the 46th Academy Awards in 1974 involving a nude guy running across the stage. A nude Cena appeared from behind the stage when the host questioned, "Can you imagine if a nude man ran across the stage today?"
Cena then stepped to the forefront, covering his man parts with an envelope and declaring the winner in the Best Costume category as the audience members laughed heartily at his expense.
"Costumes, they are so important," he quipped, and as the crowd erupted into a thunderous applause, he announced that the winner for the Best Costume Design was Holly Waddington for her work in 'Poor Things'.
The audience saw Cena cover up later in what appeared to be a curtain-gown, which made them even more uncomfortable. In the meantime, Oppenheimer won the most Oscars (2024) with seven, followed by Poor Things.
