Second Ball Rule and Lifts Saliva Ban

MUMBAI: IPL 2025 hasn’t begun yet but the fever is on and fans cannot wait for the first match tomorrow (22nd March). KKR vs RCB are going to commence the season with their first match of the season. There are reports that the match might get postponed as it is raining in Kolkata.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced significant rule changes for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, including the reinstatement of saliva use and the introduction of a second ball for the second innings. These decisions were finalised during a meeting with team captains and managers at the Cricket Centre in Mumbai on March 20.

A reliable source present at the meeting confirmed that a second ball will be introduced after the 11th over of the second innings. The primary aim is to counteract the effects of dew, which often gives an unfair advantage to teams batting second under lights. By implementing this rule, the BCCI aims to ensure a more balanced contest, reducing the influence of the toss on match outcomes.

Meanwhile, the lifting of the saliva ban marks a return to traditional bowling techniques. The restriction was originally imposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) during the COVID-19 pandemic to prevent virus transmission. However, with the pandemic no longer a pressing concern, calls for its removal have grown louder, particularly from fast bowlers like Mohammed Shami, Vernon Philander, and Tim Southee. Shami had recently advocated for the use of saliva, highlighting its role in aiding swing and reverse swing.

Regarding the second ball rule, the BCCI has left the decision to the umpires, who will assess the playing conditions, particularly the presence of dew, before implementing the change. This means the rule will primarily be applied in night games, while afternoon matches are unlikely to see its use.

With these updates, the BCCI aims to refine the playing conditions in the IPL, ensuring fairness while maintaining the competitive nature of the league.
