Talking about drama and entertainment, do you remember all the controversies that took place in the IPL seasons till now? IPL 2025 is the 18th season and in these 16 years, there has been many controversies. Let’s take a look at some of the biggest controversies.
Sreesanth slapped by Harbhajan Singh

This controversy took place in 2008, IPL’s first year, after Kings XI Punjab rose victorious against Mumbai Indians. The broadcast spotted S Sreesanth crying after getting slapped by Mumbai Indians captain Harbhajan Singh. Even though the captain apologized, he was banned for the season and also received a five-ODI suspension.
SRK banned from Wankhede

In 2012, the fifth season of IPL, KKR led by Gautam Gambhir won the season with their last match against Chennai Super Kings. The final match took place at Chepauk and KKR’s victory prevented captain MS Dhoni from completing a hat-trick of titles.
However, there’s something else that became the highlight of the season. Fans witnessed a heated argument between KKR co-owner, actor Shah Rukh Khan and one of the security guards of Wankhede Stadium. This happened at the end of KKR vs MI. As a result, SRK got a five-year ban at the iconic cricket ground.
Kohli vs Gambhir face-off

Both Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir are known for being aggressive and not holding back against their opponents. This has led to their face-offs multiple times over the years of their careers. The first incident took place during RCB vs KKR in 2013. During the match, Virat Kohli got out after scoring 35 runs but then got into a war of words with Gautam Gambhir. A decade later, during RCB vs LSG when Gambhir had become LSG’s mentor, a second face-off took place as Gambhir took a stand against Virat Kohli on behalf of Afghan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq.
Spot-fixing scandal

In the 6th season of IPL, three players from the Rajasthan Royals team were involved in the infamous spot-fixing scandal. S Sreesanth was arrested along with two other players Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan. The players were arrested after making suspicious gestures like rotating their watches, and putting towels in their pants. Apart from the three players, several bookies were also arrested.
The case had only begun as later, even Raj Kundra, co-owner of RR, and CSK team principal Gurunath Meiyappan (who happened to be the nephew of then-BCCI president N Srinivasan) were investigated. 2 years after the initial scandal and the investigations, Justice RM Lodha suspended two franchises for over a period of two years. Following the verdict, Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiant were temporarily added to the eight-team league until the Super Kings and the Royals returned to action.
‘The Captain Cool’ MS Dhoni got furious over Umpire’s decision

MS Dhoni, the legendary captain and wicketkeeper-batter, is renowned for his composed demeanour, even under intense pressure. This unflappable nature has not only established him as one of the greatest finishers in modern cricket but also as an exceptional leader. However, even ‘Thala’ has had his rare moments of frustration on the field — one of the most notable being his dramatic confrontation during Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Jaipur.
The incident occurred during Chennai’s chase of a 152-run target. Dhoni had been dismissed on the third delivery of the final over, bowled by Ben Stokes. The drama unfolded when Stokes bowled a full toss that was initially called a waist-high no-ball by the on-field umpire. However, the square-leg umpire overruled the decision, sparking Dhoni’s rare display of anger.
In an unusual move, Dhoni stormed onto the field from the dugout to confront the umpires, visibly upset by the overturned decision. Despite the chaos, Mitchell Santner kept his cool, smashing Stokes for a six off the final delivery when three runs were needed, sealing a thrilling four-wicket victory for CSK.
Dhoni’s uncharacteristic outburst did not go unnoticed, and he was subsequently fined 50% of his match fee for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. Though the controversy added to the drama, it only reinforced Dhoni’s fierce competitive spirit and his unwavering commitment to his team.
