Tonight on Crime Patrol, get set to see an episode which will throw a light on the age-old mindset of the Indian society (Haryana in particular) where women are still treated as the second fiddle to their male counterparts.
The episode in this Optymistix show on Sony Entertainment Television will take this relook through the agonizing tale of a 17-year old Smriti who will be forcibly married to a man 33 years older to her.
Smriti’s marriage will be in fact an arrangement under the popular ‘atta-satta’ tradition prevalent in Northern India where two families exchange their marriageable daughters with the boys thus settling four lives together.
Smriti will be shown married off to Hukum Singh, a 49-years old widower whose cousin Devika’s marriage will be settled with Smriti’s uncle Shyam. As expected Smriti’s family will prefer wealth over sentiments and agree to marry 17-years old Smriti with Hukum Singh. So much so that they will not even think of telling Smriti about her would be groom.
Smriti will only learn about the identity of her husband during the marriage ceremony and she will be so shocked with the development that she will not be able to express her anger at that moment.
When she will return home for the gauna ceremony, she will refuse to go back to Hukum Singh who will also sexually abuse her. Her parents instead of supporting her will apply all kind of forces and restriction on Smriti to force her into giving in. Smriti will be held captive in her own home without food and water but she will refuse to bow down. She will one day seeing a good opportunity run away and report the matter to the local police. But the valiant Smriti’s story will have a shocking end when she will be killed in broad daylight on Hukum Singh’s orders.
Will Smriti’s effort go in vain or justice will happen with her?
The episode will be aired tonight.
