Charul Malik: TV hasn't changed; we have changed

MUMBAI : Actress Charul Malik, currently seen in Bhabiji Ghar Par Hai, believes that while television has consistently showcased certain types of content, today's audience has been exposed to a wider variety of content. She adds that she has yet to encounter a regressive storyline offered to her on TV.

"My thoughts on the lack of progressive content on TV are that television has indeed evolved in terms of content. I believe our mindset regarding TV has also shifted. We've started focusing on better content because we now have better platforms, web series, films, and other content to choose from. So, TV itself hasn't changed; we have. I've never encountered a regressive storyline in my career because I'm very selective, and I think it's easy to manage due to my capabilities. I only take on what I can handle, and I feel blessed and balanced in my career. I haven't faced any situation that has left me unsatisfied or made me feel like I had to compromise," she says.

When asked if she feels that the TV industry is resistant to change, she responds, "No, I believe the industry is changing. The idea of change is important, but I feel TV content has improved. Experimentation is necessary, but if a show doesn’t perform well, it gets canceled. So, a lot of thought and understanding are required before making such decisions. However, the comfort zone remains with the familiar 'saas-bahu' dramas, and that’s what's being delivered."

She adds, "I don’t think there’s a need for drastic change because we’ve shifted our mindset, right? People say TV should change, that it should show different things, but I don’t think I’m in a position to dictate that. TRPs drive everything and if a show gets good TRPs, it brings in ad revenue. Channels earn money when shows perform well, so ultimately, it’s all about money. The storyline and content are secondary to what boosts TRP. People watch TV to pass time, and if a show works, it gets ads, which means business. I think it’s about what the audience connects with and wants to watch. If you ask me, I would say there should be more content on current topics that raise awareness and deliver meaningful messages, however, most people just want to watch drama."
