I'm grateful: Ronit Roy on comparison with Big B

Ronit Roy

He's often called the "Amitabh Bachchan of Indian television" and his command over spoken English and Hindi further fuels the comparison. Ronit Roy says he can only be "grateful" and feels a sense of pride when people compare him to a legend such as the Big B.

At a press conference here on Tuesday night, when Ronit gave the audience a glimpse of what's in store in his stint as the host of reality game show "Deal Or No Deal", he reminded one mediaperson of Big B's style of hosting "Kaun Banega Crorepati".

Is he inspired by it?

"Why? Is it because I talk in Hindi?... Anyway, it is very good (if you were reminded of Mr. Bachchan). I'm grateful that you thought so... Every Indian actor gets inspired by Mr. Bachchan.

"He is the film industry's pillar, he's a legend... We are only climbing the first steps of the spot he is at... He has done all kinds of work. When he sits on the stage and recites poetry, it's magical.

"I am inspired by that magic. So, I feel a sense of pride and feel honoured that you remembered him when you saw me perform," Ronit said here.

In semi-formals, the "Adaalat" actor looked suave and even did a little jig on the title track of the game show, which will go on air on &TV starting on September 5.

The show will see family members play a game of chance, and try their luck to win Rs.1 crore.

In the international format of the show, 26 models participate to hold briefcases for the player. But in this 'desi' version, there will be 26 family members holding the briefcases, while the 27th family member will be the player.

It is this family aspect which makes the show more "real" than any reality show for Ronit.

"There's so much of togetherness... I think it's a brilliant idea to have a family as part of the game, and to hinge on the 'parivaar' concept of India," he said.

The hugely popular actor, who has even featured in films like "Udaan" and "Ugly", chose to do a reality show like "Deal Or No Deal" at this point because "it's a great show to do".

"It's a high energy show and as a human being, I wanted to do something different. I meet new people everyday... And also get to know how much they love me," said Ronit, who is remembered as Mihir Virani of "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi".
