A Unicef initiative on DD1, Kyunki… Jeena Issi Ka Naam Hai that had educated and inspired many viewers has crossed its 200 episodes mark. The show focuses on socially sensitive issues like the ill effects of child marriage, early pregnancy, gender equality and prevention of HIV/AIDS. Talking about the achievement, Naysan Sahba, Programme Communication Specialist at Unicef India Country Office, who also conceptualised the serial says, “We received discouragement from every corner when we began to work on the show’s concept about four years ago when the saas-bahu sagas were immensely popular. But we went ahead and it is a matter of double delight as not only is the show doing well but a new wave of socially conscious TV serials, serials tackling hard-hitting issues effecting women and children, have followed the suit and are taking the country by storm.” This accomplishment has thrilled the entire cast and crew of the show. Lead protagonist Geeta Bist says, “It took me some time to understand what this show was trying to do but once I got involved I realised that this was not just some run-of-the-mill kind of shows. The role of Shabnam is more challenging from other roles that I have done because these situations that she’s faced with are not make-belief but real life battles that women all around India have to face.” Talking about one track that really tested her skills, the actress says, “The domestic violence track that I played was really difficult for me to grapple with but if Shabnam gives courage to even one woman out there then I would consider myself a true success.” "This show is very bold as it talks about things that many other shows are not willing to talk about. The way it dramatically portrays the need for hand washing and links it with the use of toilets and sanitation is really amazing. And what is great is the fact that all this educating is done in an entertaining way so that we don’t sound like a textbook", says Geetanjali Gill who plays Kamla in the show. The show has also played an instrumental role in sowing the confidence in the young girls from rural areas to openly discuss such issues with their respective families that were earlier considered taboo. Interestingly, the show that talks about the social ailments of the country has a rather unique viewership that includes unexpected regulars in youngsters and men. With pertinent messages on health, education and social development the show intends to educate the masses without being preachy. Kyunki…this is indeed a unique show.
