TellyChakkar got in touch with Anil, who spoke about his journey, future and more. Read on…
Which popular shows are you proud of, for the casting that you had done?
"Zindagi Mere Ghar Aana" was that show.
From how many years have you been working as a casting director? And how has your journey been?
It's been 11 years up till now. To reach this level I've struggled a lot, I started off as an assistant then became an associate. After that I started picking individual shows. Eventually I reached the level where I am today.
What changes have you noticed in casting over these years?
There's a lot of difference, initially all the actors used to struggle a lot because the only source of contact was email and mobile numbers which was very tedious and time consuming. But now because of social media applications the process has eased up a lot. People used to save their audition recordings on a CD to use later.
What thought process goes in your mind while casting a particular actor for a role?
I have to think from the director’s perspective and the base storyline. We try to launch and cast new actors from similar backgrounds of the story.
Any particular actor who's your favourite and would want to cast in your future projects?
I think Amar Upadhyay, because his nature is very good. But there's no actor who's my favourite and I haven't casted him yet.
What tips would you give to an aspiring casting director?
I would advise to pick individual projects and know the actor and the character in depth. One must give his time and efforts behind understanding the character and the actor.
Do you think casting directors are under paid?
The thing is there are so many new casting directors that the competition has raised. So, any new casting director who doesn't even have enough knowledge agrees to work on lower payment. We used to get more money before.
Did you have to tolerate any particular actor's tantrums?
No, I haven't faced any such situation yet. The thing depends on who's arguing, if there's a new actor then people say that they're unprofessional. A casting directors’ way of briefing the actor plays a vital role here.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
I will be focusing on freelancing and making the actors work ready.
Keep up the good work Anil!
