MUMBAI: Podcaster-influencer Ranveer Allahbadia's controversy doesn't seem to die anytime soon. He is facing legal charges as well as a public backlash over his question, "Would you rather watch your parents have sex for the rest of your life, or would you join in once and stop it forever?" during his appearance in the show India's Got Latent. However, actor Sherleen Dutt, who is known for Koi Jaye Toh Le Aaye, Shringarika and Honey Trap Squad, has come in support of the YouTuber and said that in India people are too quick to make judgements and form opinions.
Voicing her opinion on the whole controversy, she said, "Many people quickly imagined a backstory that didn’t really match how Ranveer acted during the show. He was laughing and seemed relaxed. This shows that we sometimes jump to conclusions about someone based on one mistake, even though everyone has flaws."
"No one is perfect, and we should be careful about judging others too harshly," she added. She further pointed out that while many serious cases remain pending in India, a comment like this, which was a joke made on a comedy platform, received such serious consequences, such as filing an FIR (a formal police complaint). She added, "If someone in another country asked the same question, it might not cause such a big uproar. This difference in reactions shows that sometimes our focus is on minor issues instead of the major problems that affect society."
"It is important to talk about things that bother us, and people are allowed to express their opinions. If someone doesn’t like what Ranveer said, they can choose to stop watching his show or talk about it. However, turning a single joke into a huge scandal seems excessive. It often feels like there is a strong urge to punish anyone who tries to push boundaries or say something different," Sherleen ended.
