MUMBAI: Actress Shivangi Verma, who has worked in shows like Tera Ishq Mera Fitoor, Choti Sarrdaarni and movie Badass Ravi Kumar, says that TV has grown in its content. She adds that today women characters are shown to be stronger and are no longer damsels-in-distress.
“TV has changed a lot, and I love that we now see strong, independent women leading the story. But yes, I still feel there’s more to do! We need to show women that they are bold, emotional, career-driven, and not just stuck in old stereotypes. Women today are doing everything, and our stories should show that too,” she says.
She adds, “Every role I play teaches me something. They made me realise how important it is for women to have a voice and never be afraid to speak their minds. I always try to bring some real emotions into my roles because I know many women watching might relate to them.”
Ask her what she would like to be changed in the industry, and she says, “Men and women work equally hard, so why should there be a difference in pay? I believe talent should decide your worth, not your gender. We need to keep talking about this until things are truly fair. I want more women in leadership roles, directors, producers, and writers. The more women behind the camera, the better stories we’ll see on screen. And I want every woman to be treated with respect, whether she’s an actress, a crew member, or working behind the scenes. Women deserve equal opportunities everywhere!”
She adds, “Social media has given women a big platform, which is amazing! But bias still exists, sometimes women get judged more harshly than men. But I love how so many female influencers are using their voice, breaking stereotypes, and inspiring others. The more we support each other, the stronger we get.”
Meanwhile, talking about the women who she looks up to, she says, “There are so many amazing women in my life. But first, my mom, she’s my biggest inspiration. She’s strong, and caring, and has taught me to never give up. I also look up to women in my industry who break barriers and prove that talent has no limits. Every woman who follows her dreams and never stops believing in herself is an inspiration to me.”
