Kids may create ruckus in the building complex- they may smash a window or two while playing cricket, their chirpy banter may seem like noise to some and being children they will be naughty at times. Agreed that adults may be cross with colony kids from time to time but a neighbourhood sans kids will have no soul.
The Tappu Sena breathes life into Gokuldham Cooperative Housing Society on SAB TV’s Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (Neela Telefilms). The child actors of the sweetly notorious Sena have been a part of the show for five years now. Indeed, they have grown up on the sets- have played, done homework, their tuition teachers have reported to the sets to teach them and last but not the least they have been busy acting. In the process the cast and crew have become like one big happy family.
Samay Shah who plays Gurucharan Singh Roshan Singh Sodhi isn’t Sikh in real life but a Gujarati. This seventh grader in St. Joseph’s School told us, “It has been an amazing and fabulous experience to grow up on this show. Both the actors who have played my parents have changed- I have enjoyed working with all the actors who essayed my parents’ roles. I go for tuitions at night after shooting wraps up. I may have to stay up till 11pm or midnight in the process at times. I want to be a cricketer when I grow up. I may continue with acting too.”
The ninth grade Commerce student, Kush Shah who plays Goli Hansraj Hathi also averred to be having a great time on the sets. “As acting is my hobby, I willingly put in hard work into it. Even if I have to be busy 18, 19 or 20 hours in a day it is worth it. I want to pursue acting as a profession. My second option is MBA. Ambikaji who plays my mom on the series is very jolly and friendly with me. We play pranks on one another. Azadji who plays my father is extremely similar to me both in real and reel life. We both are food-a-holics and discuss things like where in Mulund and Ghatkopar we can get a tasty bite.”
Tarun Uppal who plays the oldest child Pinku Diwan is a first year B.A student in the Commerce stream. He informed us that kids of various building societies can easily identify with the Tappu Sena. “The simplicity of the residents of Gokuldham Cooperative Housing Society appeals to the viewers. Every housing society has a Tappu Sena.”
Regarding his career plans he said, “I like to play cricket and do event management. My primary career preference is event management. My second profession choice is acting.”
We wish all the boys all the best in whatever they do.
