MUMBAI: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has been temporarily suspended due to mounting tensions between India and Pakistan, with the BCCI pausing the tournament on May 9 following the sudden stoppage of the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match in Dharamsala. The suspension was prompted by security concerns linked to the deteriorating geopolitical climate.

The BCCI emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of players, officials, and fans while acknowledging the logistical difficulties involved in continuing the tournament under current conditions. The league has been halted for a minimum of one week, during which the board will monitor the situation closely.

To resume the season, the BCCI is reportedly exploring safer venues across India, with Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru identified as potential alternatives due to their stable environments and strong infrastructure.

In a surprising turn, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has offered to host the remainder of the IPL in the UK. With 12 league matches and four playoff games left, the proposal aligns with India’s upcoming Test series in England beginning June 20. Former England captain Michael Vaughan has backed the idea, suggesting it could be a viable solution.

However, relocating the tournament abroad presents challenges such as time zone management, international travel, player availability, and scheduling clashes, particularly with the approaching Asia Cup.

For now, the BCCI remains cautious, keeping all options open as it prioritizes safety. The next few days will be crucial in determining whether IPL 2025 continues in India or marks an unprecedented move overseas.
