MUMBAI: Five-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have had a challenging start to the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League. After clinching victory in their tournament opener against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians, the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led squad has suffered consecutive defeats against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals. In an effort to reassure fans, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja shared a picture of himself alongside MS Dhoni, captioned, "Things will change."

During the recent clash against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati, Jadeja and Dhoni gave their all to secure a win. With 39 runs needed from the last two overs, they struck 19 off Tushar Deshpande’s penultimate over. In the final over, CSK required 20 runs with Sandeep Sharma holding the ball. After a wide first delivery, MS Dhoni seemed poised to pull off a miraculous chase. However, a combined effort from Sharma and Shimron Hetmyer saw Dhoni dismissed on the first ball, ending CSK’s hopes as they fell short by six runs. Dhoni scored 16 off 11 balls, while Jadeja remained unbeaten on 32 from 22 deliveries.

MS Dhoni’s batting position in the recent games has sparked debate, particularly after he came in at No.9 against RCB. Against Rajasthan Royals, he walked out to bat at No.7. CSK head coach Stephen Fleming later explained that Dhoni’s persistent knee issues prevent him from batting for extended periods. Fleming highlighted the importance of managing Dhoni’s workload, saying, "He judges it himself. His knees aren’t what they used to be, and while he’s moving okay, it’s not ideal for long innings. He’ll assess on the day what he can contribute."

Fleming emphasised Dhoni’s value to the team in leadership and wicketkeeping, noting that sending him earlier in the innings could strain him unnecessarily. "From around 13-14 overs, he looks to go, depending on the match situation," Fleming added.

CSK currently sit seventh in the points table. They will aim to bounce back in their next fixture against Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday, April 5.
