Amazon Prime Video to premiere four direct to digital releases soon?

Amazon Prime Video has apparently grabbed the direct to digital releases of four top actresses of the southern film industries.

MUMBAI: Amazon Prime Video has apparently grabbed the direct to digital releases of four top actresses of the southern film industries. And they are Tamannaah Bhatia’s Telugu film, That Is Mahalakshmi; Kajal Aggarwal’s Tamil film, Paris Paris; Parul Yadav’s Kannada film, Butterfly; and Manjima Mohan’s Malayalam film, Zam Zam.

Tamannaah Bhatia’s Telugu film, That Is Mahalakshmi, the official Telugu remake of National Award-Winning Bollywood blockbuster Queen, looks certain to skip theatres and release directly on OTT.

The film has been complete for a long time. With the Covid-2019 pandemic nowhere near to abating, it doesn’t look like theatres will reopen for a long, long while yet.

So, if the strong buzz in media and industry circles is to be believed, the makers of That Is Mahalakshmi have made up their minds to premiere their movie directly on a streaming platform. Prasanth Varma’s directorial, That Is Mahalakshmi will thus become the latest film to skip theatres and head for a direct digital release.

But that is not the only buzzy news about the Queen remake. Word is that even the Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam remakes of Queen are ready since long, and are now planning for a Direct To Digital release.

Ramesh Aravind has directed the Tamil and Kannada versions. The Tamil version is called Paris Paris and stars Kajal Aggarwal as the lead. The Kannada version is called Butterfly and stars Parul Yadav as primary protagonist. Lastly, the Malayalam version, named Zam Zam, is directed by G Neelakanta Reddy and stars Manjima Mohan as lead.

But the most significant buzz is that Amazon Prime Video has snared all the four remakes of Queen, and will premiere the movies on its platform soon.

The Hindi original Queen had Kangana Ranaut playing the role of a girl who is stood up on her wedding day by the groom to be, played by Rajkummar Rao. Not one to wallow in her sorrows, the spunky girl goes on her European honeymoon all alone.

Queen was a blockbuster hit, but looks like its South languages remakes will have to make do with direct to OTT releases.
