The OTT shows experienced drastic reactions, from being scrutinized as a result of the alleged hurt caused to religious sentiments to boycotts demanding the removal of show bits that were deemed offensive.

Despite these changing trends still being in their infancy, the OTT space remains one of the most liberated in terms of Indian entertainment. Feel free to decide whether the controversy they surrounded was justified.
1.Mirzapur:
"Mirzapur" is one of Amazon Prime's most successful web series, with a massive fan base for both seasons. But people raised their eyebrows when they claimed that the show insults Hindu Gods and portrays Uttar Pradesh in a bad light, which hurts religious sentiments. A journalist filed an FIR against the show claiming it hurt his religious sentiments and portrayed the district poorly.
2. Tandav
Even though it featured veterans like Dimple Kapadia at its forefront, Ali Abbas Zafar's Tandav couldn't escape controversy. After premiering in January, the show sparked controversy over scenes with religious overtones. As a result, a police report was filed against the show’s makers for “hurting” sentiments, which led to two scenes being deleted from Tandav after its release. Supreme Court has granted relief to the head of Amazon India, because the show streams on prime.
3. The Empire:
Nikkhil Advani's The Empire, released on Disney+ Hotstar, is based on Mughal Ruler Babur's journey to India. The show, starring Kunal Kapoor and Dino Morea, was criticized for glorifying the Mughals, in particular Babur, as many believed it hurt religious sentiments.
4. Bombay Begums:
This is Pooja Bhatt's first acting role in decades. In response to the show's release, the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) raised complaints objecting to the show's portrayal of children in an inappropriate manner. On social media, many also called for a ban on the show, claiming it promoted child pornography.
5. The Family Man 2:
Even before its June release, the second season of the critically acclaimed Family Man, starring Manoj Bajpayee, found itself in a soup of controversy. Samantha Ruth Prabhu, the second season's newest cast member, played Raaji, a rebel from the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) militant group, and was criticized by netizens for her portrayal of an extremist. The show’s makers were also heavily called out for using brownface for Akkineni’s character with allegations of stereotyping South Indians.
It might go down as the year of controversial web series in India until the incoming year replaces its less-than-enviable position.
